We run rancid against two different kinds of devices, one using clogin
and one using hlogin, but we often see erratic config differences. It
seems that almost randomly "e" or "x" characters will show up toward
the beginning of certain lines. Here are a few examples:

This is troubling because with the number of devices we check there
is almost always a flake-out on a few of them, making config change
notifications very spammy.

I am running this system on on an
Ubuntu Hardy server with expect version 5.43.0. It did not look like
the expect patch had anything to do with these random characters, so I
have not patched/hacked my expect. In the past I have seen this - as
well as seemingly random spaces at the beginning of lines with Cisco
ASAs - on RHEL 5 machines as well. Any pointers in the right direction
would be appreciated.
