The Sun System Handbook is intended to be a single source resource for information on Sun hardware products. The Sun System Handbook: Internal/Partner 2.1 CD is derived from the online version of the Sun System Handbook currently located on a Sun web site, and it is designed to be a reflection of the web site for ease of use.

The Sun System Handbook: Internal/Partner 2.1 CD uses Java[tm]-based technology and a web-server framework solution to make the Sun System Handbook experience virtually identical on multiple operating system platforms. No disk space or installation is required to use the Sun System Handbook: Internal/Partner 2.1 CD.

Software Requirements

• Solaris[tm] 2.6 or later
• Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000
• Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.3.1 or later
• Netscape 4.x or later

Note: The Sun System Handbook CD has not been fully tested on Mac OS X (10.1.3) or RedHat Linux 7.2, but it does work on both operating systems (run the syshbk.sh script from a terminal window).

Refer to Accessing the Sun System Handbook Without a Search Engine if your system does not meet the system requirements or if you don't need to use the search engine.

Checking if JRE is Installed

To check whether your system has the required version of JRE installed, enter the following command in a terminal window (Solaris) or DOS window (Windows):

If JRE 1.3.1 or later is not installed on the system, go to Installing JRE 1.3.1.

Installing JRE 1.3.1

You can install JRE 1.3.1 from the following locations:

• http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/
• /jre131 directory on the Sun System Handbook 2.1 CD; the installation file is in shell-script format for Solaris (j2re-1_3_1_02-solsparc.sh) and a self-extracting executable for Windows (j2re-1_3_1_02-win-i.exe).

Note: You must run the JRE 1.3.1 Solaris shell script from a directory where you would like the files to be installed. Also, after you install JRE 1.3.1 on a Solaris system, make sure the directory where you installed the j2re1_3_1_02/bin directory is part of your path environment variable. Refer to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/install-solaris.html for detailed installation instructions.

Accessing the Sun System Handbook CD: Solaris Systems

This procedure depends on JRE 1.3.1 or later installed on the system.

1. Insert the Sun System Handbook 2.1 CD into the CD-ROM drive.

   The File Manager window should display.
   
   

2. Double-click the syshbk.sh icon in the File Manager window.
   
   Note: Instead of using File Manager, you can also change directory into the /cdrom/cdrom0 directory using a terminal window and run the syshbk.sh script.
   
   The Sun System Handbook Server window displays. This is used to start the web server for the search engine.
   
   

   Note: If you have problems running the syshbk.sh script, you may have to restart Volume Management on the system:
   (a) Eject the CD
   (b) Become root
   (c) /etc/init.d/volmgt stop
   (d) /etc/init.d/volmgt start
   (e) Reinsert the CD
   
   
3. Click the Start button on the Sun System Handbook Server window.
   
   

4. Point a web browser to the following URL:
   
   

   http://localhost:8652

   
   The Sun System Handbook License Agreement page is displayed.
   
   Note: You may encounter a problem accessing the Sun System Handbook CD when using localhost with a Proxy server. If so, you must set your browser to not use the Proxy for localhost (when using Netscape 4.x, choose Edit->Preferences, choose Advanced->Proxies, click View for Manual proxy configuration, and enter localhost in the "No Proxy for" field).
   
   
5. Read the license agreement and click the "Accept" button.
   The Sun System Handbook 2.1 CD home page is displayed.

Whenever you are finished using the Sun System Handbook, click the Stop button on the Sun System Handbook Server window to stop the web server for the search engine. The web server will automatically stop if the system is rebooted.

Accessing the Sun System Handbook CD: Windows Systems

This procedure depends on JRE 1.3.1 or later installed on the system.

1. Insert the Sun System Handbook 2.1 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
   
   

2. Open the CD with the file manager.
   
   

3. Double-click the syshbk file.
   
   The Sun System Handbook Server window is displayed. This is used to start the web server for the search engine.
   
   

4. Click the Start button on the Sun System Handbook Server window.
   
   

5. Point a web browser to the following URL:
   
   

   http://localhost:8652

   The Sun System Handbook License Agreement page is displayed.
   
   Note: You may encounter a problem accessing the Sun System Handbook CD when using localhost with a Proxy server. Accessing the Sun System Handbook Without a Search Engine

If your system does not meet the software requirements or you do not not need to use the search engine, all you need is a browser to view the contents of the CD.

1. Insert the Sun System Handbook 2.1 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
   
   
2. Point a web browser to the following file on the CD:
   
   

   path_to_CD/syshbk/webapps/syshbk_cd/index.html

   
   The Sun System Handbook License Agreement page is displayed.
   
   Example:
   
   Solaris using Netscape: file:/cdrom/cdrom0/syshbk/webapps/syshbk_cd/index.html
   
   
3. Read the license agreement and click the "Accept" button.

License Restriction

If you are a Sun authorized service provider, the terms of your agreement with Sun determines how many users per CD you may have. Generally, it is one user per CD.
