PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Some shipments of the above listed systems (including SPARCstation 5,
Ultra 1, Ultra 2 and Workgroup Servers) may see various disk related errors,
including SCSI timeouts, drive offline and trap 31 when exercising the
onboard SCSI interface. These messages will appear in the system console
window.

Below is an example of a related trap error message:

   BAD TRAP CPU1 TTYPE 31 rp=0x30033b10 addr=0x0 mmu_fsr=0x0

   unix: WARNING: /sbus@1f,0/SUNW,fas@e,8800000 (fas0):

The above failures are attributable to the coupled mode/activity dip problem
on crystal p/n 150-2417-01 manufactured by KSS. A limited number of systems,
having the KSS crystal, were shipped in the first quarter of calendar year
1997.
The failure rate observed was under 1%. Corrective actions were in place at
Sun Manufacturing around the middle of March 1997 via Worldwide Stopship
Notice WW200#09143.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
  	| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
	 ---

         ---
  	| | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
	 ---

         ---
  	| X | UPON FAILURE
	 ---

REPLACEMENT TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

Upon failure, replace any of the below listed affected part numbers having the
KSS crystal with another having the StopShip label "WW200#09143" or NOT
having
the KSS crystal.

The affected boards are listed below with KSS Crystal component locations:

   	501-3059-XX - X1104,D4D4
   	501-2836-XX - X1102,C5H5
   	501-3082-XX - X1102,C5H5
   	501-4291-XX - X1101,C5H8
   	501-2486-XX - X1101,C5H8
   	501-4134-XX - X1101,C5H8
   	501-2487-XX - X1101,I9N1
   	501-3132-XX - X1101,I9N1

KSS crystals (Sun p/n 150-2417-01) can be identified by the following
markings/date codes:

	40DKSS6M	40DKSS7A	40DKSS7B
