PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Quantum DLT7000 tape drives may fail with right column of LED's flashing.
These tape drives are failing at a higher than expected rate due to a buckling
link defect (A01 and A02), and a tach pulse problem which was introduced in
firmware version V45.

Only tape drives within the Sun date code range 9735 - 9806 are affected
by the buckling link defect. The affected Sun serial number range is from
9735000000 to 9806999999. Quantum serial number range is from CX73500000
to CX80699999. Only tape drives with firmware version V45 are affected by
the tach pulse problem.

Root cause of the buckling link defect has been attributed to increased
friction
in the buckling link rotational axis. Root cause of the tach pulse problem is
firmware that causes a less reliable position for the cartridge leader and
causes
the drive leader mushroom to buckle. The vendor has updated the tooling for
the
buckling link to give tighter distribution of torsion spring force in order to
improve buckling reliability, and resolved the tach pulse problem in firmware
version V72.

Corrective action was implemented in Sun Manufacturing by a dash roll to 02 of
the 370-3330, 370-3331 and 370-3332 drives via ECO# WO_13120 on June 16, 1998.
Enterprise Services implemented this corrective action via LEAPs 949 and 950 on
April 27, 1999. The vendor has EOL'ed the 4MB drives (Sun p/n 370-2329,
370-2847,
and 370-3272). When drives within the affected date code range are returned
from
the field they will be sent to the vendor to be updated to the latest hardware
and firmware level. Updated tape drives can be identified by the 02 dash
number
on the 8MB versions even though the serial number/date code may still be in the
affected range.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
  	| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
	 ---

         ---
  	| X | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
	 ---

         ---
  	| | UPON FAILURE
	 ---

REPLACEMENT TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

Upon failure or upon request replace as follows;

Replace 370-2847-xx with 370-3330-02
Replace 370-2329-xx with 370-3331-02
Replace 370-3272-xx with 370-3332-02

Replace 370-3330-01 with 370-3330-02
Replace 370-3331-01 with 370-3331-02
Replace 370-3332-01 with 370-3332-02

COMMENTS:

Note: A damaged cartridge will cause buckling failure which is unrelated
to the force applied by the buckling link. Reference FINIO407-1 for the
DLT cartridge inspection procedure. Tape cartridges should be inspected
regularly.

BILLING TYPE:

________________________

i) In case of Mandatory FCOs, Enterprise Services will attempt to contact
all known customers to recommend the part upgrade.

ii) For controlled proactive swap FCOs, Enterprise Services mission critical
support teams will initiate proactive swap efforts for their respective
     accounts, as required.

iii) For Replace upon Failure FCOs, Enterprise Services partners will implement

the necessary corrective actions as and when they are required.
