PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Enterprise 250 systems may experience CPU Module failures or DOA conditions
during Power-On Self-Test (POST). Failures are catastrophic, repeatable,
and are not intermittent when they are encountered.

Root cause analysis showed that the supply vendor found that during
manufacturing of the 400MHz Ultra Sparc II Module, one of the the tools
used to attach the SRAM heat sinks was out of calibration. This condition
caused cracking of the SRAMS which resulted in DOA conditions or premature
failures on Enterprise 250 systems.

Only Enterprise 250 systems within the serial number range 038Hxxxx to 039Hxxxx
were shipped with affected 400MHz Ultra Sparc II Modules. The "H" in
the serial
number is the Plant Code and stands for Newark, CA.

Not all of the modules produced during this 2 week period were affected but
it is impossible to determine which ones were without screening and testing.
Visual inspection alone is not adequate.

All 295 affected systems have been identified, located and are listed via a
link in the Special Considerations section below. Quantities of affected
modules in each system are unknown, however, there are a maximum of 2 modules
per system. No affected Xoptions or Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) were
shipped.

Corrective action was put in place in Manufacturing via a Worldwide
StopShip/Purge P001#03682 on September 30, 2000. Corrective action was put
in place in Enterprise Services via a DPCO# 210 on December 19, 2000.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
  	| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
	 ---

         ---
  	| X | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
	 ---

         ---
  	| | UPON FAILURE
	 ---

REPLACEMENT TIME ESTIMATE: 0.5 hours

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

As this was a local vendor tooling issue, only systems shipped out of
the Newark, California plant are affected. This means that only the
Americas and APac should be affected. EMEA and Japan should have no
affected customers.

Reference the affected customer "Ship To" list located at the following
URL;

 http://sdpsweb.ebay/FIN_FCO/FCO/FCO_A0174-1_Dir/ShipList.ps

CORRECTIVE ACTION :

Proactively replace all modules (Sun p/n 501-5445-05) in all affected
Enterprise 250 systems per "Ship To" list, or any Enterprise 250 system
within System Serial Number range 038Hxxxx to 039Hxxxx, with 501-5445-05
(or above).

Please refer to the Sun Enterprise 250 Server Owner's Manual (P/N 805-5160-10)
for details on removing and installing Enterprise 250 CPU modules. Specific
instructions for these procedures can be found on pages 81-83.

COMMENTS :

There is no visual or software means to determine an affected module.
