PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Change History
--------------
A0176-1

Date Modified: Sep/18/2002
. FCO re-released after being put on hold in mid-June pending a single
power cord failure on an internal Seregeti system. The failure turned
out to be unrelated to this FCO.

A0176-2

Date Modified: Nov/21/2002
Updates: IMPLEMENTATION, CORRECTIVE ACTION
. IMPLEMENTATION: changed from Mandatory to Controlled Proactive
. CORRECTIVE ACTION: Changed "Proactively replace..." to "Replace
upon
                     customer request or as needed..."

--------------

Power cords on the E10000 were being assembled with the leads being pre-tinnned
prior to mechanical assembly of the connector. This violates UL 1950 standard.

Although highly unlikely, it is possible that the pre-tinned connections could
become loose and cause the power connector to overheat, which could cause the
system to lose power and shutdown.

Root cause analysis determined that Sun's assembly drawing called for tinning
the ends of the power cord wires. This was determined to be incorrect per
UL, CSA and TUV agencies. Sun drawings have been corrected and new part
numbers have been released via the ECOs listed in the Reference section above.

Corrective action was made availble in Manfacturing via ECO releases of ECO

PLANNED IMPLEMENTION COMPLETION DATE: September 30, 2003

IMPLEMENTATION:

 ---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
 ---

 ---
| X | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
 ---

 ---
| | UPON FAILURE
 ---

REPLACEMENT TIME ESTIMATE: 1.5 hours

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION:

To assist in determining how many power cords should be replaced,
the below table should be used.

Per
Sys New Old
Qnty Part Number Part Number Description
---- ----------- ----------- -----------
 4 530-2994-02 530-2380-01 AC MAIN PWR,EURO - IEC 309
 4 530-2993-01 530-2503-01 AC MAIN PWR,US - L6-30P - 14.75'
 4 530-2379-02 530-2379-01 AC MAIN PWR,US - L6-30P - 20'

Most systems will have four (4) of only one of the above power cords.
A very small number of sytems have the Dual Power option installed.
Those systems will have eight (8) of one of the above power cords.

 1 180-1943-01 530-2265-02 AC PWR SEQ,US - L6-30P
                   530-2567-02

 1 180-1944-01 530-2266-02 AC PWR SEQ,EURO - IEC 309
                   530-2568-02

Most systems will have one (1) of only one of the above power cords.
A very small number of sytems have the Dual Power option installed.
Those systems will have two (2) of one of the above power cords.

 2 180-1954-01 530-2674-01 STOREDGE CAB,US - L6-30P
 2 180-1955-01 530-2675-01 STOREDGE CAB,EURO - IEC 309

All 72-inch StorEdge Cabinets have two (2) AC Power Cord per unit.
It is estimated that most E10K systems will have one 72-inch Cabinet.

CORRECTIVE ACTION :

Replace upon customer request or as needed all affected power cords
as follows;

 Replace 530-2380-01 with 530-2994-02
 Replace 530-2503-01 with 530-2993-01
 Replace 530-2379-01 with 530-2379-02

 Replace 530-2265-02 or 530-2567-02 with 180-1943-01
 Replace 530-2266-02 or 530-2568-02 with 180-1944-01

 Replace 530-2674-01 with 180-1954-01
 Replace 530-2675-01 with 180-1955-01

IMPORTANT: The 20ft domestic power cord (Sun p/n 530-2379-02) can only
be used to replace existing installed 20ft domestic power
cords (Sun p/n 530-2379-01). To replace any other power
cord with the 20ft power cord would be considered a UL
           compliance violation.

It is recommended that the system be powered down when replacing the
power cord, however where this is not likely please reference the E10000
service manual which describes procedures for replacing the AC input module.
