PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Customers attempting to run patchinstall from SunSolve media (any version)
may encounter SCSI errors.

Typical Error Example;

Error for Command: read Error Level: Retryable
Requested Block: 1320608 Error Block: 1320608
Vendor: TOSHIBA Serial Number: 12/12/97
Sense Key: Media Error
ASC: 0x15 (random positioning error), ASCQ: 0x0, FRU: 0x

The problem appears only to occur on E250 and Ultra2 systems as a media issue
combined with 32x speed cdrom players using new SunSolve media "patch1"
CD.

The same new CD works perfectly in Ultra5 systems with no errors.

This problem can be reproduced by mounting the CD and typing "cat
patchinstall".
The failures only occur on the first attempt to access any file. To reproduce
the problem again the cd must be ejected and reloaded.

Target 6
Unit 0 Removable Read Only device TOSHIBA XM6201TASUN32XCD1103

Root cause is still under investigation.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
        | | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
         ---

         ---
        | | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
         ---

         ---
        | X | REACTIVE (As Required)
         ---

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

Enterprise Customers and Authorized Service Representatives may avoid
the above mentioned SunSolve CD software problem by following the
recommendation as shown below:

1. The workaround is to read the CD on a slower speed drive (less than 32x).

UPDATES FOR FIN# I0518-2
------------------------

NOTE: This UPDATED FIN adds the mention of additional information
in the form of a workaround as shown below:

Short term fix:

1. Use a slower speed CD-ROM drive to use the SunSolve CDs.

	    OR

2. Read the README file first on the CD. ie "cat REAMDME.FIRST"
then run patchinstall. This will prevent the error mentioned
above. However, subsequently the patchinstall routine may log
more errors during the patch installation and the process may
    hang.
