PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

On early Netra X1 units with Lights Out Management (LOM) Firmware
version V3.8 or lower, the system may occasionally report that the fan
is running too slowly when the system is powered up for the first
time. If this happens, the LOM system will turn the server's 'Fault'
LED on, blinking. However, the impact to the customer is minimal and
can be rectified from console. See instructions in Corrective action.

The problem is related to the environmental as it can be seen in units
that are being powered up at low temperature ~ 2 degrees C or have been
shipped via air freight and powered up for the first time from the
manufacturer's factory. Failure has not been observed at ambient room
temp or on systems allowed to acclimate to room temp over a period of
time.

Failing configuration is any Netra X1 that is being powered up for the
first time from shipping or storage with LOM Firmware version V3.8 or
lower. Symptom Identification is that the LOM system will turn the
server's 'Fault' LED on, blinking upon initial power up.

Typical error message:

LOM event: +0h2m44s Fan 1 FATAL FAULT: failed 44%

The minimum allowable speed of the fan is determined by it's minimum
operating voltage. This translates to a minimum drive waveform
mark-space ratio of 0.3. The LOM is letting this drop to 0.21 as it
ramps the fan speed down at lower temperatures, thus the fan is
significantly under driven at cold temperature and the LOM reports the
error.

The LOM code driving the fan needs to be reprogrammed. This is a long
term fix and will be available in the respun LOM patch 110208.

Three steps are being taken.

1. A one page warning document is being shipped along with new systems at
Sun Manufacturing. WO_20362 will release this. Text is detailed in the
corrective action. This FIN will serve the same purpose.

2. The LOM FW is being re written to incorporate the fix. This will be
released to Sun Manufacturing for cut-in ASAP as V3.10 in the 375-0132-03
or 375-3015-04 part via ECO WO_20446.

3. The LOM patch 110208 has been respun and now available on Sunsolve
   since April 12 2001.

IMPLEMENTATION:

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives who may be encountering the
above mentioned problem.

1) Check which LOM version is installed from the LOM prompt.

     lom> version

Then the screen will display with the following.

     LOM version: v3.x

 OR

Check which LOM version is installed from the Solaris # prompt.

     # lom -c | grep version

Then the screen will display with the following.

     firmware version=3.x

2) If the version is 3.8 or lower, install PatchId #110208-09.
