DOC: 806-7792-13: Sun StorEdge Raid Manager 6.22 Upgrade Guide.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Where customers having Raid Manager 6.1.1 and Solaris 2.5.1 run into
problems that can only be resolved by upgrading to Raid Manager 6.22,
this FIN highlights the process and procedures to be followed for the
Raid Manager 6.22 upgrade.

Raid Manager 6.22 is the only supported version of software for the
A1000, A3x00 and A3500FC. It was previously not supported on Solaris
2.5.1 which many customers still use. The only way for those customers
running Solaris 2.5.1 and Raid Manager 6.1.1 to get support for Raid
Manager is to upgrade both Raid Manager and Solaris.

RM 6.22 was not tested previously on Solaris 2.5.1 by Sun engineering
until the number of big customers that using RM 6.11 with Solaris 2.5.1
needed to upgrade RM 6.11 to RM 6.22 within same operating
environment. Recently QAST have tested and qualified RM 6.22 under
Solaris 2.5.1 11/97 in order to better support and fulfill our
customers' request.

Sun testing of RM 6.22 on Solaris 2.5.1 was completed successfully
on SCSI A1000, A3x00 and A3500. The latest 108834 patch for RM 6.22
has been tested on Solaris 2.5.1. This means RM 6.22 can be used to
cure Raid Manager problems on Solaris 2.5.1 systems given that the
following procedure is CTE approved: 1) CTE verifies that RM 6.22
fixes the escalated problem 2) The field and the customer should review
the constraint list for RM 6.22 on Solaris 2.5.1 which is available
from CTE.

Functionality restrictions in RM 6.22 under Solaris 2.5.1 - Constraint
List.

+ No fibre channel support exists.

+ No more than 8 LUNs per array can be supported

+ known limitations in the RM 6.1.1u2 release notes such as 1262802
(OBP), 1266503(CDE) and 4080130 (Solaris) still apply when using
RM 6.22 since the cause is outside of Raid Manager software.

There is limited support for RM 6.22 under Solaris 2.5.1. Since this
OS is in EOL status future testing of RM 6.22 on this OS will not be
done. The RM 6.22 release was tested with limited configurations on
Solaris 2.5.1 and can be supported when agreed upon by NWS CTE.

Future releases of Raid Manager 6.22 will not be qualified on Solaris
2.5.1 at SUN. RM6.22 was previously never been qualified on Solaris
2.5.1 at SUN as that release of Solaris is at EOL. RM 6.22.1 is not
qualified on Solaris 2.5.1.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

An Authorized Enterprise Field Service Representative may avoid the
above mentioned problems by following the recommendations as shown
below.

Please perform the following guideline as needed:

If a customer running Raid Manager 6.1.1 on Solaris 2.5.1 runs into
a problem without any available fix and possibly fixed in Raid Manager
6.22, it is necessary to get CTE approval to verify that Raid Manager
6.22 fixes the escalated problem.

If upgrading to Raid Manager 6.22 on a Solaris 2.5.1 system, Please
refer to Sun StorEdge Raid Manager 6.22 Upgrade Guide, 806-7792-13, in
the following URL which contains the step-by-step upgrading procedure.
The document also contains precautions of Upgrade Restrictions, Upgrade
Conditions, Steps to prepare before the upgrade, Setting the System Up
for the Upgrade, and the Upgrade procedure for both the Host Software
and the Module Firmware.

    http://acts.ebay.sun.com/storage/A3500/RM622/

NOTE: When following the procedure, make sure this requires a
maintenance window of three to five hours of system downtime,
depending on the host boot time and the number of modules to
      be upgraded.
