Manual: 806-5318-10: Sun StorEdge Instant Image 2.0.1 Configuration
                     Guide.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

The Fast Write Cache 2.0 and Instant Image 2.0 documentation states
that the products will work with Java versions 1.2.1 and higher. This
is not the case. For installations without Component Manager 2.1, Java
versions 1.2.1_04a through 1.2.2_05a are the only versions of Java that
will work with Instant Image 2.0 and Fast Write Cache 2.0. If
Component Manager 2.1 is installed, then Java 1.2.2 is the only version
of Java that will work. Java 1.3 does not work at all with these
products.

Systems that are currently running will not be affected if no software
change is made. If system administrators wish to change their current
version of Java, they should be aware of the constraints below
concerning the versions of Java that are compatible with Data Services
products.

No data will be affected, but administration of DS products will not be
possible using Component Manager or the Instant Image GUI when the
incorrect version of Java is installed.

Failing Configuration:
----------------------

1) Instant Image 2.0 or Fast Write Cache 2.0 is incompatible with
   Java 1.3.x

2) Instant Image 2.0 or Fast Write Cache 2.0 AND Component Manager 2.1
is compatible only with Java version 1.2.2.

So, where an "X" denotes compatibility:

		     | Java 1.2.1 | Java 1.2.2 |Java 1.3.x |
     -------------------------------------------------------
    | DS2.0 w/CM 2.1 | | X | |
    |-------------------------------------------------------|
    | DS2.0 w/o/CM2.1 | X | X | |
     -------------------------------------------------------

Symptom Identification and Error Messages:
------------------------------------------

When a system administrator installs a version of Java that is not
compatible with the current installation of Instant Image 2.0 and Fast
Write Cache 2.0, error messages such as the one shown below might
be generated:

  ./esm_orderly start
  esm_setup:
MOBoot: ERROR: station "MOStation" start error on realm
"StoreX".
ERROR: MCStation not running, cannot start Storage Volume Management
         Service
ERROR: MOStation not running, cannot start Instant Image Management
         Service
MCBoot: ERROR: station "MCStation" start error on realm
"StoreX".
                 esm_setup:

  esm_setup:
ERROR: MCStation not running, cannot start Instant Image Management
  Application

  # ./esm_orderly stop
ERROR: MCStation not running, cannot stop Instant Image Management
         Application
ERROR: MOStation not running, cannot stop Instant Image Management
         Service

These conditions cause both Component Manager and the Instant Image
GUI to break.

The Component Manager assumes that a certain version of the Java
Runtime Environment is installed. If the correct version is not
installed, then Component Manager functionality will not be available,
and neither will the GUI interface to Instant Image.

There is no fix for this problem. Workaround: System Administrators
should make sure that the correct version of Java is installed.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
        | | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
         ---

         ---
        | | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
         ---

         ---
        | X | REACTIVE (As Required)
         ---

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

An Authorized Enterprise Field Service Representative may avoid the
above mentioned problems by following the recommendations as shown
below.

If installing Instant Image 2.0 and Fast Write Cache 2.0 software
under Java environment, make sure to observe following cases:

  1. If Component Manager 2.1 is NOT installed, Java versions 1.2.1_04a
     through 1.2.2_05a will only work

  2. If Component Manager 2.1 is installed, then Java 1.2.2 is the
only version of Java that will work.

  3. Java 1.3 does not work at all with these products.

There is no fix for this problem. Contact system administrators
to make sure that the correct version of Java is installed.

If Instant Image and Fast Write Cache are currently running without
problems, then this problem will never occur. If a system
administrator has recently changed the system's version of Java and
seen error messages similar to those above, then the new version of
Java should be uninstalled and replaced by one of the versions listed
above.
