PROBLEM DESCRIPTION :

Sun Professional Services is selling Brocade Silkworm Switches containing
GBIC's which have no Sun label or part number. This FIN will provide
guidance for replacing these non-Sun GBIC's in the case of failure.

All Brocade Silkworm switches that are re-sold through Sun Professional
Services (PS) will contain IBM or Finisar GBIC's without Sun part numbers,
which are identical to the short wave GBIC's that Sun currently sells and
supports. The Brocade switches themselves will have a Sun part number
(370-4395-01 or 370-4396-01) and a serial number label, but the GBIC's
in the switches may not have a Sun part number. The non-Sun GBICs will
be labeled as follows;

 Vendor FAB Markings
 ------ ------------------------
 IBM IBM42S10LNNAA20 (21H985)

 Finisar FTR-8519

These GBIC's can be found in any SAN configuration using a Brocade switch
sold by Sun Professional Services (PS). These switches are being sold due
to a cost reduction opportunity identified by Sun PS. It is expected that
1500 to 2000 of these switches will be sold over the next 12 months.

Failed GBIC's can be identified by using normal SAN troubleshooting
procedures. See the "Sun StorEdge Network FC Switch-8 Troubleshooting
Guide", 806-5514-10, for help in isolating a failed GBIC in a SAN switch.

Reference the Corrective Action section for details on replacing these
non-Sun GBIC's.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
        | | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
         ---

         ---
        | | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
         ---

         ---
        | X | REACTIVE (As Required)
         ---

CORRECTIVE ACTION :

An Authorized Enterprise Field Service Representative may avoid the
above mentioned problems by following the recommendations as shown
below.

When a non-Sun GBIC is found to have failed in a Brocade switch that is
covered by a Sun support contract, please adhere to the following
procedure.

  1. Remove and discard the failed non-Sun GBIC.

  2. Replace with a Sun supported GBIC having one of the following three
     part numbers; 370-2303, 370-4379 or 370-3975.

The failed GBICs should be thrown away since there is no repair process
for these boards. Field Engineers should order Sun short wave GBIC's
through normal channels to replace ones that have failed.
