PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Customers and the Field may encounter the Raid Manager problems
described in Bug 4521759, but not know where to find the fix.
Customers wishing to continue RAID Manager 6 support need to move to
RM 6.22.1 and Solaris 2.6 or later.

This problem is independent of host or HBA type and independent of
which version of Solaris is being used, and occurs on StorEdge A3x00
and A3500FC Arrays. The problem is that the "bugs fixed" list in the
RM 6.22.1 Release Notes is not complete.

The bugs fixed or partially fixed in RM 6.22.1 and subsequent patches
which aren't identified as fixed are:

. 4489954 RM6.22: Amber LED's Failed drive not taken over to hotspare
                  drive automatically.

. 4521759 Important LSI fixes not listed in RM6.22.1.

The fix list for Bug 4521759 is:

LSI PR RM 6 release Description
------ ------------ -----------
51092 6.22.1 inquiry/SOD much quicker when bad drive is present
51211 112125,112126 flush drive cmd queue when drive fails
53326 112125,112126 writes of 10byte cmd so QERR bit reset OK
51110 112125,112126 controller must fail intermittent drive quickly
51111 112125,112126 controller must fail intermittent drive quickly

These fixes address the following problem areas:

  1) Bad drives are not reported upon failure.
  2) Controller hung when a drive fails such that the drive side bus is
hung but the controller keeps on accepting commands from the host.

LSI repaired bugs in its main firmware source tree for which Sun had
never filed a bug. Such bugs are not reported in Sun documentation like
Release Notes and patch README's which list only Sun bugs fixed.
Further, the RM 6.22.1 release was finished before these newer Sun bugs
were evaluated.

The bugs were already fixed by LSI, the Raid Manager vendor. This FIN
announces that they were fixed in already released versions. The patch
README's for 112125 and 112126 were updated before being
released.

Solaris 2.5.1 support is discontinued because the release is End of Life
and Sun did not test RM 6.22.1 with Solaris 2.5.1.

IMPLEMENTATION:

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.

Upgrade to RM 6.22.1 and install Patch 112126 for Solaris 8,
or Patch 112125 for other Solaris versions above Solaris 2.5.1.

NOTE: These patches provide controller firmware which may need to be
installed. Perform a 'raidutil -c xyz -i' to determine the
current controller firmware level. Use the Maintenance & Tuning
GUI to download the most current firmware for rm6.22.1.

Online RM 6.22.1 documentation may be found at:

      http://www.sun.com./storage.disk.drives/raid.html

NOTE: RM 6.22.1 patches are not available for Solaris 2.5.1.
