Patch: 112494: Sun_Fire firmware flashprom update 5.13.2 ScApp RTOS

URL:

ECO: W0_23978

SunAlert: 46105

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 firmware versions 5.12.6 (and below) and
5.11.x are not compatible with the latest released version of Cheetah
processors. The Cheetah Mask 2.3 CPU (900MHz and 1050MHz), as well as all
future CPU releases, will not be recognized when installed into Sun Fire
systems with these two earlier versions of firmware. Because of this,
customers and field support may need to proactively upgrade Sun
Fire system firmware to either version 5.12.7 or 5.13.2.

This issue affects any Sun Fire system without version 5.12.7 or 5.13.2
firmware, and where one of the following occurs:

   a. New Sun Fire System Boards with 900MHz or 1050MHz Cheetah Mask 2.3
CPUs are being installed as upgrades.

   b. Sun Fire System Boards are replaced by FRUs containing Cheetah Mask
      2.3 CPUs.

Beginning in late July, 2002, Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 systems will
have Cheetah Mask 2.3 900 MHz CPUs and 5.13.2 firmware installed at the
factory. Servers with serial numbers 232xxxxx or greater are expected
to ship with the new version 2.3 CPUs.

Customers ordering X-Option System Boards with 900 MHz or 1050 MHz
Cheetah Mask 2.3 based CPU boards (after the week of July 27, 2002) will
require system firmware upgrades to 5.12.7 or 5.13.2 in order to
operate the Cheetah 2.3 based CPU boards in a Cheetah Mask 2.2 900 MHz
environment.

In adddition, when all Cheetah 2.2 900 MHz CPUs are consumed, the
repair centers will transition to Cheetah 2.3 CPUs. This will require
customers to use 5.12.7 firmware (or later) when a Cheetah 2.3 based
900 MHz CPU board is installed as a FRU.

Required Firmware Support Table:

    ---------------------------------------------------------
   | 900 MHz Mask 2.2 | 900 MHz Mask 2.3 | 1050 MHz Mask 2.3 |
   |------------------+------------------+-------------------|
   | 5.12.5 or 5.12.6 | 5.12.7 or 5.13.2 | 5.13.2 |
    ---------------------------------------------------------

The following System Board dash levels (and higher) will have Cheetah
Mask 2.3 CPUs:

        --------------------------
       | Part Number CPU Speed |
       |==============+===========|
       | 540-5267-02 | 1050 MHz |
       | 540-5268-02 | 1050 MHz |
       | 540-5269-02 | 1050 MHz |
       | 540-4990-04 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-4992-03 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-4993-03 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-5094-03 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-5095-03 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-4984-03 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-4934-04 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-5089-03 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-5051-03 | 900 MHz |
       | 540-5052-03 | 900 MHz |
        --------------------------

The CPU Mask version can be seen in the output of 'showboard -v'
from the System Controller prompt:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
   | Component | Cpu Mask | Description |

   | SB4/P2 | 2.1 | UltraSPARC-III+, 900MHz, 8M ECache |
   | SB4/P3 | 2.1 | UltraSPARC-III+, 900MHz, 8M ECache |
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

If a System Board containing Mask 2.3 CPUs is inserted into a 5.12.5 or
5.12.6 system, the following messages appear on the console:

   sc-hostname:SC> poweron sb0

This Sun Fire firmware compatibility issue results from the need to ship
System Boards with Cheetah Mask 2.3 CPUs. These CPUs provide JTAG
implementation.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
        | | MANDATORY (Fully Proactive)
         ---

         ---
        | X | CONTROLLED PROACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
         ---

         ---
        | | REACTIVE (As Required)
         ---

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.

Upgrade Sun Fire system firmware to the correct version for Mask 2.3
UltraSPARC III+ CPUs using the table below.

 ----------------------------------------------
| 900 MHz Mask 2.3 CPU | 1050 MHz Mask 2.3 CPU |
+----------------------+-----------------------+
| 5.12.7 or 5.13.2 | 5.13.2 |
 ----------------------------------------------

Customers who plan to install 1050 MHz processors in the future should
install version 5.13.2 now, otherwise two firmware upgrades will be
necessary.

This firmware is available in the following patches:

Patch 112127 5.12.7
Patch 112494 5.13.2

Proactively upgrading the customer's firmware prior to replacement of
a System Board FRU will prevent additional troubleshooting due to
inadequate firmware support.

See FIN I0815-1 and the Sun Fire Firmware Compatibility Matrix for
information about installing Sun Fire firmware.
