PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Sun Logistics has received a significant number of orders for Sun Fire
V880 CPU/Memory Board Air Baffles, P/N 540-4431-01.  There should be no
need to order this non-FRU part because every V880 system ships with 3
extra baffles.  This FIN will describe the location of these spare
baffles and provide information for their use.

CPU/Memory Board Air Baffles are used to ensure proper airflow when a
CPU/Memory Board is removed from a card cage slot.

From the Sun Fire V880 Server Service Manual, page 32:

  CAUTION - Either a CPU/Memory board or an air baffle must be installed
            in each CPU/Memory board slot at all times.  After removing a 
            CPU/Memory board, you must install a replacement board or an 
            air baffle immediately to avoid an automatic thermal shutdown.

The 3 spare air baffles which ship with every Sun Fire V880 system are
located above the CPU cage, attached to the inside of the chassis.
They are yellow in color and have a small black push button for locking
the air baffle into position.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.

When removing CPU/Memory Boards from Sun Fire V880 systems, utilize
the spare air baffles provided with the system to maintain proper
air flow and avoid thermal shutdown.

i)   In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to    
     contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of 
     the FIN. 
   
ii)  For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical    
     support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN  (to their  
     respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer. 

iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as the   
     need arises.
