BugId: 4643255: prtfru is too slow for large systems.

PatchId: 110460: SunOS 5.8: fruid/PICL plug-ins patch.
	 112959: SunOS 5.9: patch libfru.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Explorer 3.5.2 and 3.5.3 do not collect FRUID data by default from any
UltraSPARC III platforms via the Solaris 'prtfru' command due to
problems executing this command on Sun Fire 12K/15K systems. Explorer
3.6 only collects FRUID data for platforms other than Sun Fire
12K/15K. These issues prevent service personnel from using FRUID
information as a valuable tool in supporting customer systems.

This issue affects any UltraSPARC III system running Solaris 8 or
Solaris 9.

FRUID data is generated for capture and transmission by running the
'prtfru' (1M) command on Solaris 8 or above. The data transmission
mechanism for field FRUID data is primarily the Explorer utility. Due
to very slow 'prtfru' execution times on Sun Fire 12K/15K systems,
Explorer 3.5.2 and 3.5.3, by default, do not collect any FRUID data for
USIII platforms.

Explorer 3.6 tests for Operating System level and platform type. If
the system type is not Sun Fire 12K/15K, 'prtfru' is enabled by
default. If the system type is Sun Fire 12K/15K and the OS level is
Solaris 8 or 9, 'prtfru' is disabled.

This issue occurs due to an inefficient initial implementation of the
'prtfru' command. FRUID data acquisition for Sun Fire 12K/15K systems
required 8 hours, but for other platforms only required 2 minutes.
Reimplementation of this command has reduced FRUID data collection on
Sun Fire 12K/15K systems to under 20 minutes. For other platforms the
time remains 2 minutes.

This issue is addressed by 'prtfru' patches 110460 for Solaris 8 and
112959 for Solaris 9. See special implementation details below.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
        | | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
         ---

         ---
        | X | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
         ---

         ---
        | | REACTIVE (As Required)
         ---

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.

1. At a time convienent to the customer, check all UltraSPARC III
based systems for patches 110460 for Solaris 8, or 112959 for
   Solaris 9.

2. If not present, download and install the appropriate patch from SunSolve.

3. Once these patches are installed, FRUID collection can be enabled by
running Explorer with the following options: -w default, fru

Implementation Footnote:

i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Sun Services will attempt to contact
all affected customers to recommend implementation of the FIN.

ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Sun Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.

iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Sun Services will implement the FIN as the
     need arises.
