Description
This guide describes a handy technique for transferring Sun RayTM user
and desktop registration data to a new Sun Ray enterprise server. This
technique is useful when you upgrade the server, because it eliminates
the need to re-enter Sun Ray data on the new server.

Overview

When you upgrade the Sun Ray enterprise server to new hardware - from
an Ultra EnterpriseTM 250 server to an Ultra Enterprise 450 server, for
example, it is necessary to transfer all user and desktop information
to the new hardware. You can do this in a few simple steps:

     1. Before you take down the old Sun Ray enterprise server, you must
create text files of the Sun Ray user and desktop registration
data. The steps for doing this are described in the first
        procedure below.

     2. After you bring up the new Sun Ray enterprise server and install
the Sun Ray enterprise server software on it, you must copy the
Sun Ray user and desktop registration data to the new system.
The steps for doing this are described in the second procedure
        below.

To Create Sun Ray Data Files

     1. On the old Sun Ray enterprise server, use the following utuser
command to dump all Sun Ray user data into the file /tmp/users.

      $ utuser -o /tmp/users

     2. On the old Sun Ray enterprise server, use the following
utdesktop command to dump all Sun Ray desktop data into the file
       /tmp/desktops.

      $ utdesktop -o /tmp/desktops

     3. Insert a diskette into the diskette drive.

Note - In these procedures, a diskette is used to transfer the text
files from one system to another, but you can use NFS, FTP, or any
     other file transfer technology.

     4. Using File Manager, copy the users and desktops files to the
        diskette:

         a. On the front panel, click the arrow button above the File
Manager icon and select "Open Floppy."

         b. Open a second File Manager view of the /tmp directory.

         c. Drag and drop the users and desktops file icons from the
/tmp folder window to the diskette window.

     5. Eject the diskette by selecting File Eject in the diskette
       window.

To Read In Sun Ray Data Files

     1. Insert the diskette into the new Sun Ray enterprise server's
        diskette drive.

     2. Using File Manager as described above, copy the users and
desktops files to the /tmp directory.

     3. Eject the diskette by selecting File Eject in the diskette
        window.

     4. Become root and type the following commands to add all Sun Ray
user and desktop data to the new server.

      # utuser -af /tmp/users

      # utdesktop -ef /tmp/desktops

Duplicating User Data on a Second Sun Ray Enterprise Server

The above procedures can also be used to duplicate the user database on
a second Sun Ray enterprise server (with its own interconnect and set of
SunRay 1 appliances). Then all of your users can log in to an appliance
on either of the two Sun Ray enterprises. Note that the user session will
be different in each Sun Ray enterprise.

This type of configuration makes sense in deployments where applications
can be associated with physical locations. For example, in a school
setting, a Sun Ray enterprise could be located in each classroom.
Students could use their smart cards to access word processing
applications in an English class, for example, and then use the same
smart cards to access programming applications in a Computer Science
class.

A student's user session will be preserved within each Sun Ray
enterprise, but not between enterprises. So, when a student accesses his
or her Sun Ray session in English, it appears exactly as it was left at
the end of the last English class. However, when he leaves English and
goes into Computer Science, he exits one Sun Ray session and accesses
another, completely different Sun Ray session on a different Sun Ray
server.

Note - Although Sun Ray user data can be duplicated on a second
Sun Ray enterprise server, Sun Ray desktop data should not be
duplicated in this way, as it contains the unique MAC addresses of
the Sun Ray 1 enterprise appliances. When you set up the second
Sun Ray enterprise server, you must attach new appliances and
register them using the Sun Ray enterprise server administrative
     software.
