46963   Sun StorEdge[TM] 9900 SIM information for IBM S390   9 Sep 2002

Status Issued

Description

If the SE9900 is connected to an IBM S390 (mainframe) and a SIM is generated it may be logged to the operator console. The SIM will look similar to this:

IEA480E 01D2,SCU,MODERATE ALERT,MT=2105,SER=0312-41220,REFCODE=1500-98F0-0000

This SIM may or may not appear on the SVP and may or may not be received via Hi-Track.

If you need to decipher the SIM refer to the simrc PDF.

In this instance the breakdown is as follows:

-IEA480E 01D2,SCU,MODERATE ALERT,MT=2105,SER=0312-41220,REFCODE=1500-98F0-0000

-IEA480E is the message identifier

-01D2 is the device address of the disk (lun/ldev) that reported the error. This just ahppened to be the device that was doing I/O at the time the errror was reported, it does not mean that this is a failed disk.

-SCU represents Storage Control Unit. This should be standard for all 9900 SIMs

-MODERATE ALERT represents the severity. It can be service, moderate, serious or acute.

-MT=2105 represents the hardware model. You will usually see 3990 or 2105 but do not expect to see 9910 or 9960 since these are Sun/HDS model numbers. The array is probably emulating a 3990 controller.

-SER=0312-41220 represents the serial number. For our purposes, 41220 is all we need.

-REFCODE=1500-98F0-0000 is the refcode for the SIM. This is where we have to start to work. The 1500 represents bytes 22 and 23 of the SIM sense data. In this case it is an "Ethernet Error for SVP" and was actually caused by an SVP that had a "blue screen". No SIM was reported via Hi-Track and no SIM was logged on the SVP.

The simrc PDF has all of the refcode data.
