Status Issued

Description

The Sun StorEdge D2 array is a four rack unit (4 RU) JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks),

direct-attach, storage subsystem containing up to twelve Ultra3 disks.

An environmental services module (ESM) monitors the status of the enclosure using light-emitting-diodes (LEDs)

Each ESM has two independent Ultra3 160 MB SCSI bus connections. Daisy-chaining is not supported.

The Sun StorEdge D2 array can be connected to a host in one of the two following ways:

.....* a Sun PCI Dual Ultra3 SCSI host adapter (160 MB/second) installed in a host

.....* an on-board single-ended, 40 MB/second SCSI port.

Supported Workgroup Servers with embedded SCSI port attachments are

SunEnterprise 220, 250, 420, 450, and Sun Fire 280R servers.

Sun StorEdge D2 arrays come in one of two bus configurations:

.....* In a single-bus configuration (with one ESM)

............All disks (both left and right bank of disks) are controlled by ESM0

............SCSI Target ID's are (left to right) 0-5 and 8-13.

.....* In a split-bus configuration (with two ESMs)

............SCSI Target ID's are: left bank (left to right) 8-13 for ESM0

............right bank (left to right) 8-13 for ESM1.

Power and Subsystem LEDs Descriptions:

LED Name .................LED....................State Description

Power On ...................Green................. The system is powered on.

...................................Unlit.................. The system is powered off.

Subsystem.................. Amber................. A drive, fan, power supply, or temperature error condition exists.

..................................Flashing Amber.....An application on the host (for example, Network Storage Agent) uses

..............................................................SAF-TE commands to cause this LED to flash amber to identify the enclosure.

..............................................................Green No error condition exists.

Disk LEDs Descriptions:

LED State............................Description

Unlit....................................No disk drive is in the slot.

Green.................................. A disk drive is present but not active.

Flashing green ......................A disk drive in the slot is active.

Amber................................. An application running on the host identified an error and used SAF-TE

............................................commands to instruct this LED to display as solid amber. This can occur, for

............................................example, if the host cannot access the disk.

Blinking amber/green.............An application running on the host used SAF-TE commands to instruct this LED to

............................................identify the disk drive by blinking amber and green

Disk Labels:

On the disk labels, split rectangles in front of each disk slot are color-coded to show the SCSI IDs for the disk.

SCSI ID in single bus configuration SCSI ID in split-bus configuration:

The numbers in the left ......|.....The numbers in the right

(blue) half apply to the .......|.....(yellow) half apply to the

disk in single bus mode......|......disk in split-bus mode

ESMs:

There are either one or two ESM modules at the rear of the D2 array:

If only one is used, it is inserted in the left position (0 ) and it controls all of the drives in the array.

If two are used, ESM0 controls the left bank of drives and ESM1 controls the right bank of disks.

Below is a pictured an ESM with descriptions of all LED's and switches:

ESM Switch / LED descriptions:

SCSI A/B connectors: Two hosts can connect to each ESM. External termination is not required.

SCSI A/B term power LED: "Green" means power is being supplied from the host.

Config Option switch: 1- up: single bus config

......................................down: split bus config

...................................SINGLE-BUS CONFIGURATION.......................................................SPLIT-BUS CONFIGURATION.............................

.....................Summary of "switch 1" settings: up-.......single-bus, single ESM:

.......................................................................................all disks controlled by ESM0

...................................................................down- ...split-bus, 2 ESMs:

.......................................................................................left......disks 8-13 controlled by ESM0

.......................................................................................right....disks 8-13 controlled by ESM1

....................................2- up: disable SAF-TE status reporting, down: enable SAF-TE status reporting

....................................3 and 4- reserved

Unit ID:........................10 position switch for a unique ID for each ESM. Used so the SAF-TE

....................................status reporting system can identify the ESM.

Overtemperature LED: yellow- temp exceeds factory preset limits. (subsystem LED also turns amber)

....................................blinking- a FW code download is in progress

....................................off- Temp is normal and a FW code download is in progress

Power on/SCSI active LED: Green- Power is on

..........................................blinking- SCSI activity

..........................................off- no power to controller
