49113   No Monitor Output From Sun Fire [TM] V120 with PGX Graphics Cards   10 Dec 2002

Status Issued

Description

During a new installation or if a V120 has been set to default values, there will be no output to the PGX graphics port.

This is due to the settings of the OBP variables 'output-device' and 'input-device'. By default the OBP sets these variables to 'ttya', unlike previous Sun machines which are set to screen and keyboard respectively, so during a new installation there will be no output to the screen but rather to the serial port (for terminal/tip connection).

To fix this, the variables need to be set to the following values:

output-device=screen

input-device=keyboard

A terminal should be attached to ttya and the machine powered on. Input and output will be automatically redirected to ttya, allowing these settings to be altered using the following commands:

ok> setenv output-device screen

output-device=screen

ok> setenv input-device keyboard

input-device=keyboard

ok> reset

The machine will reset and input/output should be redirected to the keyboard and monitor respectively.

These default values are standard for the Netra T1 AC100, Netra T1 AC200 and the Netra V120. This makes sense given the normal racking practices of these low profile machines (high-density racking does not normally allow space for monitors).
