Description

All Sun Microsystems employees, including SEs, SSEs, and Sun Professional Services employees, are required to use Enterprise Installation Standard (EIS) methodology to preform installs on certain high end products. This requirement also extends to installations preformed by any of Sun Microsystem's Strategic Partners.

The following products must be installed under EIS. The date that the EIS methodology was first required (per memos by the VP of Sun Support Services) is as follows:

EIS CDs are released at the end of every month. Installation personnel should have the lastest EIS-CD set available.

You can obtain further information from the EIS home page at: http://sunweb.germany/EIS.

How can you verify that EIS was used for an installation?

Check for the existence of a log file in /var/sun/EIS-CD.log (on older systems GOLD-CD-log).

(This will be picked up by the Sun[TM] Explorer tool as well, reportedly from versions 3.5.1 onwards.)

The log file will show you:

Setup-standard will show:

NOTE: If for whatever reason the directory /var/sun is deleted after install, then the info is lost. If you DO see the log file, you can be reasonably sure of the situation. However, presence of the log file itself does not guarantee that the installer has adhered 100% to the methodology.

There is is also a tool called INSTINFO on the EIS-CD that enables installations to be tracked.

INSTINFO comprises two parts:

1) The INSTINFO script which is run by the installer when the installation is completed. The installer is instructed to do this via the EIS technical installation checklists.

2) Software on the GEO explorer database "back-end".

Instinfo report page for AMERICA and APAC can be found at http://gothia.sweden/joakim/explorerweb/instinfo/amer/

Instinfo report page for EMEA can be found at http://gothia.sweden/joakim/explorerweb/instinfo/emea/
