26435   A5x00 IB firmware upgrade problem where front panel gets disabled.   7 Sep 2001

Status Issued

Description

After downloading firmware to A5X00 array's IB (Interface Board), array goes offline with the following on the front panel:

"Display Disabled ? Please download latest Firmware"

This occurred on 2 different photons in 2 different domains running Solaris 2.7 with the same results on both. We were going from firmware rev. 1.03 to rev 1.09. The 1.03 IB's were in a one photon after running the following command: luxadm download -s -f <file> <enclosure>

"Display Disabled ? Please download latest Firmware"

This occurred while system is in single user mode and it occurred after moving photon to a different domain.

SOLUTION SUMMARY:

In our situation, we had a photon that had IBs with rev 1.09 on them. So, we borrowed one of them. Powered down the photon we were upgrading and inserted this 1.09 IB into slot B. It is important that you use slot B. Our first attempt was in slot A with the 1.09 IB. When we put a 1.03 into slot B we then had two IB's with rev 1.03. So if this is your goal you could stop here, if not, continue on. Put the 1.09 IB in slot B power up the array, and it should POST with rev 1.09 on the IB. Next, insert an IB with rev 1.03 into slot A, and viola, you now have 2 boards at rev 1.09. If you have more than one array to upgrade, move the IB with rev 1.09 you started with in slot B of this array to the next one to be upgraded and again into slot B. If you move the IB you just upgraded to another array's slot B, you run the risk of it going back to rev 1.03 as ours did. When this occurred we had to move that IB back to the original array slot A and upgrade it again.
