47404   newfs on Sun StorEdge[TM] 3310 fails with error on "minimum cylinders per group"   3 Oct 2002

Status Issued

Description

The StorEdge 3310 array has been known to sometimes report the following messages when trying to newfs a logical drive or logical volume presented to the host (typically larger than 2GB).

# newfs /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0s0
newfs: construct a new file system /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0s0: (y/n)? y
With 16129 sectors per cylinder, minimum cylinders per group is 16
This requires the fragment size to be changed from 1024 to 4096
Please re-run mkfs with corrected parameters

SOLUTION SUMMARY:

The cause of these messages is an incorrect value in the host cylinder/head/sector mapping configuration on the 3310. After connecting via serial cable or telnet, select "Configuration Parameters" from the main menu, then "Host side SCSI parameters." Select the "Host Cylinder/Head/Sector Mapping Configuration" option, and change all values to variable. Once this is changed, the newfs will complete successfully. A reboot is not necessary for the change to be recognized- the array dynamically changes the host side parameters.
