48027   Unable to flashupdate Sun Fire [TM] V880 firmware: "ERROR: system security set: system firmware was not modified"   18 Oct 2002

Status Issued

Description

Unable to flashupdate the Sun Fire V880 firmware (via patch 112186), even after having checked that the keyswitch is not in the secure position and the jumper J3003 on the I/O board is set to "write enabled" with pins 2-3 jumpered appropriately.

The update will appear to be in progress, but then it aborts with the following message:

** ERROR: system security set: system firmware was not modified

SOLUTION SUMMARY:

The solution is to check the OBP 'security-mode' option with the printenv (OBP) or eeprom (OS) command and modify the setting if required.

If set to 'command' (or anything other than none) the user will not be able to update his firmware via flashprom.

User must change the 'security-mode' parameter to none, reset the V880 and then apply the firmware update.

Example from OK prompt:

setenv security-mode none

reset-all

User should then be able able to update the firmware via flashprom successfully.
