48149   Sun Fire[TM] 15K: FAIL E$Dimm: Not compatible with processor type   30 Oct 2002

Status Issued

Description
- Problem Statement:

Late_Write type E$ dimms will fail POST.

- Symptoms:

FAIL E$Dimm SBXX/PX/E0: Not compatible with processor type.

A. The following failure is seen after replacing a CPU/MEM board from an RSL. A setkeyswitch
on operation fails to configure in the new system board:

stage cpu_probe: CPU Module probe...
FAIL E$Dimm SB14/P1/E0: Not compatible with processor type.
Primary service FRU is Slot SB14.
FAIL E$Dimm SB14/P1/E1: Not compatible with processor type.
Primary service FRU is Slot SB14.
FAIL Proc SB14/P1: Rated frequency (0) lower than majority (900)
Primary service FRU is Slot SB14.

SOLUTION SUMMARY:
- Troubleshooting:

A. Dump the E$ DIMM container from the prtfru output to determine the E$ DIMM type
and part number

- Resolution:

A. Replace system board.

- Summary of part number and patch ID's

CPU/MEM system board: 540-5052
Late_Write E$ Dimm : 370-4125
Late_Select E$ Dimm : 370-4128

4705197: cheetah+ incompatible E$ DIMMS not recognized
4703921: Processor should be crunched on bad E$, not failed

- Additional background information:

A. System boards which have been tested in the repair cycle on 3800/4800/6800 servers
do not recognize the incompatible DIMM types and are restocked. When the part is order
and installed in an SF15K/12K, the failure is encountered.

B. Serengeti supports late write and late select ecache mode dimms for cheetah+, but
there is a policy change that requires only late select mode is used for cheetah+.

C. Starcat post has been changed so that only the processor with the associated
E$ Dimms will be failed by POST.

D. SCapp version 5.13.3 will warn that this configuration is present in the Serengeti
servers. SCapp 5.14.0 will fail the associated processor.
