I think you can copy the rancid script to for example "c8xxrancid" and
change the command.
Then in the rancid-fe file you can add another devicetype c8xx that refers
to the new script.
after that in the router.db, routers.all and routers.up you can set
<routername>:c8xx:etc....

that should work
