[tac_plus] TAC Plus Encryption Types

What type of encryption does TAC Plus offer when storing the user passwords within the config file? I see the reference of DES, but I want to determine if this truly is the depreciated version of DES or the "updated" 3DES, and if this is the only option for password storage other than clear text. Is there a plan or method to implement an alternate encryption method for passwords, such as AES 256, that the TAC Plus developed daemon can support?
