PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:     

On early shipments of E10000 systems (ONLY those shipped prior to August
15, 1997), some System Boards may experience early life failures causing 
domain crashes.

Systems with multiple board domains will reboot with the failing board
removed from the configuration.

Repair analysis has attributed these failures to a DC-DC converter (power 
puck) component that is mounted on the system board.  Vendor analysis has 
determined that failures are because of early life defects (cracked input
capacitors).  

Manufacturing corrective actions were cut-in on August 15, 1997 to screen 
out the affected power puck component.  Consequently E10000 shipments 
after that date will not experience this failure mode.  SunService 
Logistics stock of suspect system boards is being purged to ensure that 
system boards supplied from spares inventory are free of the suspect 
puck component.

Due to the early life nature of this failure mode most of the boards that 
would fail already have.  Of the remaining suspect system boards 1.2% may 
still be subject to failure.  All other power pucks will follow a normal 
1,000,000 hour MTBF curve.

It is specifically recommended that this FCO be an "Upon Failure" FCO 
for the following reasons:

i) There is a greater risk of creating system down time while trying to 
   proactively swap multiple system boards.

ii) For systems shipped before Aug/15/97, most of the boards that would
    fail already have.

	a) 501-4347-08 or 501-4347-09 with 501-4347-10
or	b) 501-4786-01 with 501-4786-02

BILLING TYPE:

 Warranty: Sun will provide parts at no charge under Warranty 
           Service. On-Site Labor Rates are based on how the
           system was initially installed.

 Contract: Sun will provide parts at no charge. On-Site Labor Rates
           are based on the type of service contract.

 Non Contract: Sun will provide parts at no charge. Installation by
               Sun is available based on the On-Site Labor Rates 
               defined in the Price List.

i)   In case of Mandatory FCOs, SunService will attempt to contact all known
     customers to recommend the part upgrade.

ii)  For controlled proactive swap FCOs, SunService mission critical support
     teams will initiate proactive swap efforts for their respective accounts,
     as required.

iii) For Replace upon Failure FCOs, SunService partners will implement the
     necessary corrective actions as and when they are required.
