PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:     

When a disk drive is hot-plugged on the Ultra Enterprise 450 one of the other
disk drives in the backplane could go offline.  Disks that go offline usually
will reset and come back on their own.  If the Boot drive goes offline while
being accessed by the Operating System the system could experience a Panic
condition.

The root cause is that there is a voltage drop on the Vcc line which powers
the drives when a disk drive is hot-plugged.  Although this drop may appear
across the whole backplane it is always worse on the disk slot(s) closest to
the hot-plugged drive.

The fix to both the 4 and 8-slot backplanes is to add diodes (p/n 160-1088-01)
to the 5v & 12v precharge lines to prevent this voltage drop during a
hot-plug.
This fix was incorporated within Sun Manufacturing on November 20th, 1998 via 
ECO WO_14078.

Refer to the 'Ultra Enterprise 450 Server Documentation Set' (p/n 825-4008-03)
for clarification on how this hot-plugged feature is implemented in order for 
the Sun customer to obtain the desired results.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Only customers, who hot-plug disk drives are affected.  Customers who do
not hot-plug disk drives should not be considered for this activity.
Therefore the impact to the A20 customer base should be extremely small
or non-existent.

On systems having affected 4-slot or 8-slot backplanes, it is recommended
that the system be powered off before swapping the disk drives.

Only Seagate and Fujitsu 4.2GB/7200RPM and 9GB/7200RPM drives are known
to exhibit this condition.  IBM disk drives do not appear to be affected
by this condition.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
  
Upon failure or at customer request;

Replace 501-4148-04 (or below) with 501-4148-05
Replace 501-4189-04 (or below) with 501-5274-02

COMMENTS:

WARNING! Loss of electrical power to the backplane, and loss of disk drive
data can result from installing more than four (4) 10,000 RPM 9.1GB UltraSCSI
disk drives into the Ultra Enterprise 450 8 Disk Backplane (part number
501-4189-XX).

All Ultra Enterprise 450 systems shipped prior to November 20th, 1998 will
have the affected backplanes.

Identifying the UltraSCSI Backplane;

  Follow the directions in the section on "How to Remove a Disk Drive",
in
  the Ultra Enterprise 450 Server Owner's Guide (805-0429-10), and remove all 
  the drives from the 8 Disk Backplane(s). 

  If the bar-code number in the top-left section of the 8-slot backplane(s)
  reads 501-4189, your backplane supports up to four (4) 10,000 RPM 9.1GB
  UltraSCSI drives and any four (4) other Ultra Enterprise 450 supported
  UltraSCSI drives.  If the bar code label reads 501-5274, your backplane
  supports up to eight (8) 10,000 RPM 9.1GB UltraSCSI disk drives.

BILLING TYPE:

 Warranty: Sun will provide parts at no charge under Warranty 
           Service. On-Site Labor Rates are based on how the
           system was initially installed.

 Contract: Sun will provide parts at no charge. On-Site Labor Rates
           are based on the type of service contract.

 Non Contract: Sun will provide parts at no charge. Installation by
               Sun is available based on the On-Site Labor Rates 
               defined in the Price List.

i)   In case of Mandatory FCOs, Enterprise Services will attempt to contact
     all known customers to recommend the part upgrade.

ii)  For controlled proactive swap FCOs, Enterprise Services mission critical
     support teams will initiate proactive swap efforts for their respective 
     accounts, as required.

iii) For Replace upon Failure FCOs, Enterprise Services partners will implement

     the necessary corrective actions as and when they are required.
