PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Ongoing reliability testing in Sun's test labs have revealed that when
adding/upgrading 18.2GB 7200 RPM FC-AL drives into the Sun StorEdge A5000,
customers could experience recoverable "write faults". This will only
happen a small percentage of the time and will not happen in every case.
This problem will not occur when running typical read/write operations, but
could occur when running random seeks for read/writes across the entire disk,
such as one might see in a Rotational Vibration (RV) test, performance
tests and/or when Random Write Intensive disk operations are performed.
To Sun customers, this may show up as a performance drop in through-put.
No data is lost or corrupted. Customers that do not run Performance Tests
on their Arrays, or use applications that DO NOT simulate the highly
intensive Random Write stress of the RV test, are highly unlikely to see
these errors. To the best of our knowledge, this failure mode has not
been seen or reported from customers using the 18GB drives in the older
A5000 enclosures.
This problem will ONLY AFFECT;
* Sun StorEdge A5000 Arrays that are adding/upgrading 18GB 7200RPM drives
* Sun StorEdge A5000 Arrays that were manufactured before January 1, 1999.
This Problem will NOT AFFECT;
* Sun StorEdge A5100 Arrays (which contain 18GB, 7200RPM drives)
* Sun StorEdge A5200 Arrays (which contain 9GB, 10000RPM drives)
* Sun StorEdge A5000 Arrays Manufactured after January 1, 1999
(Note: The above StorEdge Arrays all contain revised Drive Guides)
Typical error symptoms are;
write fault error
track following error
seek error
An example of a related write fault;

Vendor: SEAGATE Serial Number: 009236
Sense Key: Soft Error
ASC: 0x3 (peripheral device write fault), ASCQ: 0x0, FRU: 0x10
Root cause is that the higher capacity disk drives are more sensitive to
rotational vibration (RV), and under certain applications can cause a high
number of write re-tries. The fix, a new ribbed drive guide, was implemented
in Sun Manufacturing via ECO WO_14180 in late December 1998. Therefore, all
A5000s shipped on or after that date will have the new ribbed drive guide
and are not affected.
A new ribbed drive guide kit part number (565-1600-01) was released via
ECO# WO_14564 on February 24, 1999 and is available as a FRU for Enterprise
Services.
IMPLEMENTATION:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
---
---
| | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---
---
| X | UPON FAILURE
---
REPLACEMENT TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The exposure is only to the original Sun StorEdge A5000 Arrays that contain
9GB, 7200RPM drives. The Ribbed Drive Guide Kit "IS NOT" intended as
an
upgrade for every A5000 in the field.
This problem will ONLY AFFECT;
* Sun StorEdge A5000 TableTop Arrays manufactured before January 1, 1999
This Problem will NOT AFFECT;
* Sun StorEdge A5100 Arrays (which contain 18GB, 7200RPM drives)
* Sun StorEdge A5200 Arrays (which contain 9GB, 10000RPM drives)
* Sun StorEdge A5000 Arrays Manufactured after January 1, 1999
* Customers that do not run Performance Tests on their Arrays, or use
applications that DO NOT simulate the highly intensive Random Write
stress of the RV tests
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Upon failure install Drive Guide Kit, Sun p/n 565-1600-01, in affected
StorEdge Arrays that have encountered the Rotational Vibration errors
after an upgrade of 18.2GB 7200RPM FC-AL drives.
COMMENTS:
The removal/installation of the drive guides is covered in the A5000
Installation and Service Manual (802-7573-15), section 7.2.10. This covers
removal/installation of the lower guides. The upper guides are removed in
a similar manner with the following difference. After gently lifting the
locking tab with a screw driver, push the guides toward the center of
the A5000 and the guides will then drop down to be removed.
An online version of this manual can be found on EDIST at;
http://edist.Central.Sun.COM/smcc/doc/802/802-7573-15/ps/
Section 7.2.10 is in the service document titled 015.service.ps
To identify if an A5000 already has the improved drive guides with
"ribs",
remove a drive from any slot. The improved drive guides have a narrow rib
running from front to back (in each slot). The older drive guide does not
have the rib. Each Drive Guide Kit is designed to address one A5000.
New Drive Guides were added to all A5x00 arrays after January 1st, 1999.
