PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Storage A1000 or D1000 (Dilbert) Power supplies fail with amber LED. Since
the Storage A1000 or D1000 has two power supplies and are redundant, the
system will continue to run with one failed power supply.
A total of 7217 affected Dilberts shipped with 14,434 affected power
supplies between June 1998 and October 1999. It is estimated that 66%
of these 7217 Dilberts will experience a power supply failure due to this
issue within three years from the time they are put into service.
The root cause has been determined to be capacitors C13 and/or C14 which
open due to corrosion of the aluminum tab inside the body of capacitor.
This condition is caused by Chlorine contamination from the capacitor
vendor manufacturing process.
The vendor put corrective action in place at the end of October 1999 and
provided an affected power supply date code/serial number range of between
9752100001 and 9814115000. Manufacturing put corrective action in place
on November 22, 1999 via Worldwide StopShip/Purge WS001#03610. Enterprise
Services put corrective action in place by implementing a purge based on
the Worldwide StopShip/Purge WS001#03610, and by issuing DPCO_175 on
February 14th, 2000.
Good material within the affected date code/serial number range can be
identified by the presence of a StopShip label "WS001#03610" located
near
the part number.

REPLACEMENT TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Field Engineers should check all E10000 systems with an internal D1000
or A1000 for a failed power supply (Amber LED) as soon as possible to
avoid unnecessary system down time. Then check for any affected power
supply serial numbers as described in the Corrective Action section.
Field Engineers should proactively check both power supplies in our
Gold and Platinum installed base, and at the next service call on all
other systems.
Power supplies must be removed from system to determine if affected
by checking the power supply's serial number against the affected
range listed under Problem Description above.
Power supplies are hot-pluggable so they can be replaced one at a
time while the system is running, assuming both power supplies are
working. If an amber LED is showing on one of the power supplies
replace that unit first, then remove and check the other power supply.
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Upon failure or request;
replace power supplies (p/n 300-1340-03) that are within the affected
date code/serial number range 9752100001 to 9814115000
with
300-1340-03 having StopShip label "WS001#03610" or with 300-1340-03
outside of the affected date code/serial number range.
On E10000 systems;
proactively replace power supplies (p/n 300-1340-03) that are within the
affected date code/serial number range 9752100001 to 9814115000
with
300-1340-03 having StopShip label "WS001#03610" or with 300-1340-03
outside of the affected date code/serial number range.
COMMENTS:
