PROBLEM DESCRIPTION :

Sunon fans used in the SunCobalt RaQ3 and RaQ4 products have proven to
have a high failure rate due to fans spinning intermittently, or not
at all.

Root cause analysis of the Sunon fans has not revealed a specific reason
for premature failure. Empirical data, and side-by-side testing with
replacement fans, have revealed superior performance and durability from
NMB and Delta fans, in comparison with the Sunon. As a result of this
testing Sun is no longer using the Sunon fans that were only released
under the -01 part number.

Corrective action was made available in manufacturing via ECO WO_23969
on May 15, 2002 by releasing part number 540-5309-02. Corrective action
was made available in Sun Services by issuing and LEAP 2056.A on
August 21, 2002,

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION :

CORRECTIVE ACTION :

Upon failure replace part number 540-5309-01, with part number 540-5309-02.

This is a CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) and therefore does not require
an onsite service call. Replacement instructions for the customer are
included in the CRU packaging.

COMMENTS :

BILLING TYPE:

 Warranty: Sun will provide parts at no charge under Warranty
           Service. On-Site Labor Rates are based on how the
           system was initially installed.

 Contract: Sun will provide parts at no charge. On-Site Labor Rates
           are based on the type of service contract.

 Non Contract: Sun will provide parts at no charge. Installation by
               Sun is available based on the On-Site Labor Rates
               defined in the Price List.

i)   In case of Mandatory FCOs, Sun Services will attempt to contact
      all known customers to recommend the part upgrade.

ii)  For controlled proactive swap FCOs, Sun Services mission critical
     support teams will initiate proactive swap efforts for their respective
     accounts, as required.

iii) For Replace upon Failure FCOs, Sun Services partners will implement
     the necessary corrective actions as and when they are required.
