PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
SMCC Engineering has noted several isolated instances involving the
Enterprise Network Array, where the EMI clip sandwiched between the
underside of the Horizontal Interconnect Board and the top edge of
the Vertical Interconnect Board nearest the Interface Boards, had
shifted just far enough to allow the EMI clip to overlap and make
contact with the soldermask over the Fibre Channel signal traces.
If one trace is grounded by the clip, the unit may experience a hard
fault or random faults on Loop A. If both traces are grounded by the
clip, Loop "A" will experience a hard fault.
*This problem can manifest as the following errors on the HOST system:

*NOTE: The above warning messages serve only as an example. Under actual
site conditions the device naming convention will vary.
This problem will appear by FRU Isolation on the A5000, to be a
"faulty"
Front Drive Backplane on Loop A, or a "faulty" Interface Board on Loop
A. In either case, the FRUs are NOT likely to be faulty, the EMI clip
should be checked and if necessary, moved off of the signal traces. The
fault should not be harmful to the FRUs due to the current limiting
circuitry in the signal path.
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
*Reference the Sun Enterprise Network Array Installation and Service
Manual (Part No. 802-7573-10) for complete diagnostic and FRU replace-
ment procedures.
The following procedure can be used to confirm EMI clip related faults:
On the FPM (Front Panel Module) press the button on the lower right corner
the access the "Menu" and the Level 2 Status Screens. Select the icon
on
the left center of the FPM to access the "Interface Boards" (IB) Menu
and
perform the following:
1. Through IB A, Port 0 (Right), verify that the FULL loop fails with
the Front backplane in the loop, and passes with the Front Backplane
bypassed.
2. Through IB A, Port 1 (Left), verify that the FULL loop fails with the
Front backplane in the loop, and passes with the Front backplane by-
passed.
3. Through IB A, Port 0 (Right), and Backplanes in SPLIT LOOP, verify
that the Front loop fails with the Front Backplane in the loop, and
passes with the Front Backplane bypassed.
4. Through IB A, Port 1 (Left), and Backplanes in SPLIT LOOP, verify
that the Rear loop passes.
A5000 units that follow this pattern should have the clip checked and then
retested before the backplane or Interface Board are replaced as FRUs.
A5000 units that do not follow this pattern exactly, may have a bad FRU and
no clip problem, OR may have the clip problem in addition to a bad FRU.
*The clip position may be observed and corrected by following the procedure
below:
1. Remove the front and rear doors and frames, side skins and top plastics.
2. Remove the top service cover
3. Remove the two screws on the Horizontal Interconnect Board between the
EPROM and Handle.
4. Observe the clip position above the L brackets and under the Horizontal
Interconnect Board. If the clip is shifted toward the EPROM then it is
likely on the traces and may be causing the problem.
5. With a small screwdriver, shift the clip as far away from the EPROM as
possible leaving sufficient room to get the screw back through the hole
for tightening.
6. Re-test the unit.
7. Re-assemble the unit.
