PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
On occasion, writing DLT type III media with a DLT tape drive will
produce a C329 bug check event (invalid back link) upon subsequent
reading of the Type III tape. A Medium Not Found error message will
be posted.
This error occurs only when a DLT7000 is writing to DLT type III media
in backward compatibility mode.
The Invalid Back Link error is caused by a logical problem in writing a
control field in DLT2000XT backward compatibility format. This only
happens in writing the Type 3 tape cartridge which is used in DLT2000XT
tape drives, a two generations old drive. Sun does not ship Type 3 tape
cartridge with it's DLT7000 products.
Quantum is developing a firmware modification to resolve the back link
problem. This firmware revision is anticipated to be available in late
June of '99. See Stop Ship: WW001#03569.
NOTE: This symptom does not apply to DLT Type III media written by
a DLT2000 or DLT4000 drive.
IMPLEMENTATION:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
---
---
| | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---
---
| X | REACTIVE (As Required)
---
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Enterprise Customers and Enterprise Field Service Representatives are
prompted to follow the recommendation shown below, in order to avoid
encountering the Invalid Back Link "C329" error caused by a logical
problem in writing a control field in DLT2000XT backward compatibility
format:
*Do not to use DLT Type III tape cartridges on any DLT7000 tape product
until the release of the anticipated firmware revision is available.
COMMENTS:
The DLT2000XT is an older generation of DLT Tape Drive. Sun does not
support this tape drive. The DLT7000 is supposedly backward compatible
Read/Write to the DLT2000.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to contact
all affected customers to recommend implementation of the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical sup-
port teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their respective
accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as the need
arises.
