PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
FROM FIN# I0531-1
-----------------
The StorEdge A3500FC is shipped with preconfigured logical units (LUNs)
that have been specially optimized for data storage in most
applications. However, any customer that requires or attempts parallel
LUN modifications to the LUNs while using SBus host adapters will
experience Bug ID 4272887 with the following error messages:
- LUNs in use by another host
- LUN being modified
- Lost communication with the controller module
Failing configurations are listed in X-Options Affected shown above.
Condition causing failure is Parallel LUN creation under RM 6.22,
Bug ID# 4272887.
A workaround procedure is detailed in Sun Manual 806-3721-10, WO_16243.
Procedure Brief Summary: Create LUNs serially on Controller A, verify
each LUN, transfer to Controller B, verify and run Format Command
Line, and Balance LUNs between controller A & B.
Root cause has been identified by Engineering, and Preliminary
patch binaries have been tested successfully. Formal SunSolve Patch
release is set for 12/14/1999.
2.6 PatchId: 105375-XX
2.7 PatchId: 107469-XX
Failure rates found during testing are system/OS dependent, and also
tied to number of LUNs being modified/recreated:
Solaris 2.7 100% if creating 32 LUN's
50% if creating 16 LUN's
10% if creating 8 LUN's
Solaris 2.6 0% on single enclosures
10% on large configurations
where a large config is more
than 10 enclosures
**NOTE: REGARDLESS OF FAILURE RATES, IT IS STRONGLY URGED THAT ANY TIME
A LUN MODIFICATION IS PERFORMED ON SBUS SYSTEM, THE SERIAL LUN
CREATION PROCEDURE (806-3721-10) SHOULD BE FOLLOWED.
Corrective Action at Sun Manufacturing is to re-work Pre-FCS units on
hand by adding new Release Notes Addendum Manual 806-3721-10, via
Deviation WO_16282. The release note will be pulled back out of the
Mfg process once the patches are released in December, 1999.
UPDATE for FIN# I0531-2
-----------------------
This UPDATED FIN adds the recommendation to install the newly released
patches that fix the problem as described above and references the new
Sun StorEdge RAID Manager 6.22 Release Notes in addition to an updated
corrective action as shown below.
IMPLEMENTATION:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
---
---
| X | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---
---
| | REACTIVE (As Required)
---
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Enterprise Customers and Authorized Enterprise Field Service
Representatives that require/request modifications to factory
pre-configured LUNs, and are running via SBus, NO longer need
to follow the fix procedure as detailed in the Sun StorEdge
RAID Manager 6.22 Release Notes Addendum 806-3721-10 nor need
to reference FIN# I0531-1.
The updated CORRECTIVE ACTION for the product limitations and
restrictions in LUN creation is now stated as follows:
1. Read the latest product release note, PN 805-7758-11, for
product limitations and restrictions in LUN creation.
2. Install the latest version of the sf/socal patches that fix
the problem. These patches are now available on SunSolve as
shown below:
For Solaris 2.6 install patch 105375 or greater
For Solaris 2.7 install patch 107469 or greater
COMMENTS:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to
contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of
the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
