PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
The Solaris 8 media kit installation instructions for Sun Enterprise
10000 Servers does not properly guide the customers through the step by
step procedures required to access and install subsequent CDs after the
first "Software" CD. The suninstall procedure portion of the Solaris
on
Sun Hardware Platform Guide's E10000 installation is incorrect.
A Documentation errors can prevent E10000 customers from installing
Solaris 8 on their domains.
Currently, approximately 50 E10000 customers are affected by this
problem. The number of customers affected by this issue will increase
over time and going forward.
Users are unable to fully install Solaris 8 on E10000 domains. After
the first "Software" CD is installed, the observed behavior differs
from what is documented in the installation instructions. Most
sysadmins will be able to fix the problem in short order, but in so
doing will have to deviate from Sun's instructions. Certainly many
support calls may be generated by this error.
IMPLEMENTATION:

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Depending on the distribution and locale that are selected, the Solaris
installation involves using one or more CDs. Each CD must be shared and
unshared before it can be used during the installation. Although there
are several methods that can be used to install the Solaris software,
only the following method will be documented in the E10K chapter of the
Solaris on Sun Hardware Platform Guide.
If you are using dtterm, select Other and enter dtterm when you are
prompted for a terminal type.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
For fresh installs
-------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Carefully read the E10K chapter of the Solaris on Sun Hardware
Platform Guide. Execute all instructions up to the suninstall
portion.
2. Insert CD1 on the SSP. As long as the Volume Manager is running on
the SSP, remounting CDs when changing them or removing the SSP as an
install client is not necessary. Note that CD1 does not refer to the
Solaris Installation CD, which is CD0.
Share CD1 as: share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /cdrom/cdrom0/s0
3. Boot from the CD as explained in the Solaris on Sun Hardware
Platform Guide.
4. Go through the suninstall process for the first CD.
Make sure to select automatic reboot. The suninstall script will
execute a reboot after the first CD has been installed successfully.
5. Select "Network File System" after Webstart displays the Media
prompt.
Webstart will prompt you for the second CD.
6. On the SSP, unshare CD1 and eject the CD.
ssp# unshare /cdrom/cdrom0
ssp# eject cd
7. Insert CD2 and share the CD.
share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /cdrom/cdrom0.
When WebStart asks for the install path, type:
<ssp_name>:/cdrom/cdrom0
8. Press [2] for Done after CD2 has been installed.
If localizations are needed, you will be prompted for the Solaris
Language CD. Otherwise, you are done with the installation.
If you need to install the language CD, perform the following steps:
9. Select "Network File System" after Webstart displays the Media
prompt. Webstart will prompt you for the language CD.
10. On the SSP, unshare CD2 and eject the CD.
ssp# unshare /cdrom/cdrom0
ssp# eject cd
11. Insert the language CD and share the CD.
share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /cdrom/cdrom0.
When the WebStart open an installer window on the SSP, Ignore
this window. Type <ssp_name>:/cdrom/cdrom0 when WebStart asks for
the install path.
After the language CD is installed, the domain is rebooted.
12. Close the WebStart installer window on the SSP.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For Upgrades
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Go through the suninstall process for the first CD. But this will not
be prompted for a automatic reboot. After CD1 is installed, the domain
prompt will be displayed.
6. Boot the domain by using the device alias of the currently installed disk.
7. Select "Network File System" after Webstart displays the Media
prompt.
Webstart will prompt for the second CD.
8. On the SSP, unshare CD1 and eject the CD.
ssp# unshare /cdrom/cdrom0
ssp# eject cd
9. Insert CD2 and share the CD.
share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /cdrom/cdrom0.
When WebStart asks for the install path, type:
<ssp_name>:/cdrom/cdrom0
10. Press [2] for Done after CD2 has been installed.
If localizations are needed, you will be prompted for the Solaris
Language CD. Otherwise, you are done with the installation.
If you need to install the language CD, perform the following steps:
11. Select "Network File System" after Webstart displays the Media
prompt. Webstart will prompt for the language CD.
12. On the SSP, unshare CD2 and eject the CD.
ssp# unshare /cdrom/cdrom0
ssp# eject cd
13. Insert the language CD and share the CD.
share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /cdrom/cdrom0.
When the WebStart open an installer window on the SSP, Ignore
this window. Type <ssp_name>:/cdrom/cdrom0 when WebStart asks for
the install path.
After the language CD is installed, the domain is rebooted.
14. Close the WebStart installer window on the SSP.
