PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

Upgrading the OBP firmware on Sun Fire V880 systems from version 4.2.9
or 4.2.10 to 4.4.7 sets an incorrect value for the variable
"diag-script". This variable is normally used by Sun Operations to
execute a customized version of POST and OBDiag. The incorrect value
for "diag-script" found in OBP version 4.4.7 will cause the voltage and
frequency of the Safari Bus to be margined. This FIN describes the
importance of setting the OBP variable "diag-script" to
"normal".

When the OBP "diag-script" variable is not set to "normal", the
frequency and voltage for the Safari Bus are margined to outer limits
for test purposes. This includes changing the bus frequency to 152Mhz
and setting the CPU's from 750Mhz to 760Mhz. As a result, good CPU
modules might be shown as failures when they actually are not. This
might lead to unnecessary module replacements.

In order to identify an affected system, use the following command from
the OBP:

         ok printenv diag-script

If the value returned for diag-script is anything other than "normal",
corrective action should be taken.

Approximately 1800 Sun Fire V880 systems have already shipped with OBP
version 4.4.7 and will exhibit this problem. It is expected that
additional systems will ship with version 4.4.7 in the coming weeks.
The changeover to version 4.5.6 has not yet occurred.

PatchID 112816 provided OBP firmware version 4.4.7. It is no longer
available from Sunsolve (112186-03 is the latest), but might still exist
in the Field.

This problem has been corrected with OBP version 4.5.6 which is
available with Patch 112186. Either install this patch or follow
the workaround given below for affected Sun Fire V880 systems.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
        | | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
         ---

         ---
        | | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
         ---

         ---
        | X | REACTIVE (As Required)
         ---

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

An Authorized Enterprise Services Field Representative may avoid the
above mentioned problem by following the recommendations as shown below.

   1) Verify the Sun Fire V880 OBP version:

      ok banner

   2) If the system is running OBP version 4.4.7, check the setting
      for the diag-script variable:

      ok printenv diag-script

   3) If the value is not "normal", set it with

      ok setenv diag-script normal
      ok reset-all

Upgrading to OBP version 4.5.6 with PatchID 112186 will also solve
this problem. This version provides numerous bug fixes.
