PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
A number of significant firmware upgrades have become available on
the Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 product line. This FIN is to
document recommended levels of the firmware and identify compatibility
between the Solaris OS releases and the Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800
firmware releases.
The information provided here should be very helpful to service
personnel who need a convenient and authoritative reference source for
Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 firmware releases. This FIN also intends
to influence customer adoption of new firmware versions and minimum
firmware versions.

This matrix documents compatibilities among the Sun Fire
6800/4810/4800/3800 system controller firmware, system board firmware,
Solaris OS releases, dynamic system reconfiguration support and
CPU/Memory boards. In addition, lists of the bugs fixed by the
different firmware versions are provided.
The current version of the firmware matrix is shown below. In the
future, the URL provided above should be accessed for information on
the latest firmware.

NOTE: 5.11.x means any version that starts with the numbering: 5.11.

It is strongly recommended that all system boards be upgraded to the
same version of firmware. While most system boards may be used with
different versions of firmware, product quality testing is performed
with uniform versions of firmware installed on all system boards.
Each firmware patch (currently 112127-xx and 111346-xx) ships with an
Install.info file. This file provides complete instructions for
determining current firmware levels and performing firmware updates.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
1) Access the following CPRE web site for information on the
latest firmware levels and patch versions available for Sun Fire
6800/4810/4800/3800 systems.

2) Firmware versions should be checked at system installation, during
hardware upgrades, or after FRU replacement. It is strongly recommended
that all system boards contain the same version of firmware. Service
personnel are encouraged to install the most current firmware
version on new installations when approved by the customer
representatives.
3) Use the instructions provided with the Install.info file for each
firmware patch to verify and update firmware.
COMMENTS:
Firmware upgrades will be scheduled as desired by customers. Customers
are responsible for maintaining Solaris OS and system firmware on
their servers.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to
contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of
the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as
the
need arises.
