PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Installation of the recently released MaxCPU boards into Sun Fire 15K
and Sun Fire 12K systems requires first installing two System
Management Software (SMS) patches and upgraded fan trays. If these
steps are not taken, the MaxCPU boards will not function properly and
the system could overheat and shut down.
The 900Mhz dual processor MaxCPU boards have been released and are
shipping from the factory in Sun Fire 12K and Sun Fire 15K servers.
The release of the MaxCPU board allows expansion of Sun Fire 12K and
Sun Fire 15K systems to as many as 52 and 106 processors respectively.
All systems that ship with MaxCPU boards installed already have the
necessary patches and correct fan trays installed.
A hold has been placed on orders for the X-option version of the MaxCPU
board (X4525A). This hold will be lifted after Sales Desk verifies with
the local sales team that the targeted Sun Fire 12K or Sun Fire 15K has
the necessary prerequisites installed for the MaxCPU installation.
To properly function, the MaxCPU board requires the following prerequisites:
. All fan trays are part number 540-5304-02. Sun Fire 12K and 15K
servers that have shipped from the factory since April 22, 2002
have these new fan trays.
. SMS 1.2 or higher is installed on the Sun Fire 15K/12K System
Controllers
. SMS 1.2, patch 112481 or higher, has been installed
. SMS 1.2, patch 112633 or higher, has been installed
Affected systems include any Sun Fire 15K or Sun Fire 12K system that
shipped prior to April 22, 2002, and where MaxCPU boards are being
installed. Those systems without SMS 1.2 patches 112633 and
112481, and without a dual fan tray (Sun p/n 540-5304-02) must be
upgraded. Note that fan trays should be upgraded via FCO A0196-1
(planned for release in late June 2002).
To identify an affected system:
A. Use 'showrev' on the Main and Spare System Controllers
to determine SMS patch levels.
# showrev -p | grep 112633
# showrev -p | grep 112481
B. Use the 'xcrev-all' script to determine the part numbers of the fan
trays. The script should be installed and run on the Main System
Controller. It can be downloaded from
http://cpre-amer.west/esg/hsg/starcat/tools/xcrev.html
Example output:
# xcrev-all ft
-----------------------------------------------------------
| Location | Part Num | Dash | Rev | Dash | Rev | Serial No.|
|==========+==========+======+=====+======+=====+===========|
| FT0 | 540-5304 | -07 | -02 | -- | -- | 326481 |
| FT1 | 540-5304 | -07 | -02 | -- | -- | 342351 |
| FT2 | 540-5304 | -07 | -02 | -- | -- | 325943 |
| FT3 | 540-5304 | -07 | -02 | -- | -- | 325973 |
| FT4 | 540-5304 | -07 | -02 | -- | -- | 342333 |
| FT5 | 540-4050 | -07 | -02 | -- | -- | 325930 |
| FT6 | 540-5304 | -07 | -02 | -- | -- | 326563 |
| FT7 | 540-5304 | -07 | -02 | -- | -- | 325955 |
-----------------------------------------------------------
Note that fan tray FT5 above is down rev.
MaxCPU boards generate more heat, which increases the ambient
temperature of the platform. If dual fan trays (540-5304-02) are not
installed, the existing fan trays (540-4050-08 or lower) will not
provide sufficient air flow through the platform. The SMS 1.2 patches
are required to provide proper thermal limit values which correspond to
the increased air flow. In addition, several MaxCPU bugs are fixed via
these SMS patches.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
Before installation any MaxCPU Board into a Sun Fire 15K or 12K system,
ensure that the following is done:
1. Install SMS 1.2 patches 112481 or later and 112633 or later on
the Main and Spare System Controllers.
2. If necessary, upgrade any system fan trays to version 540-5308-02 by
following the directions given in FCO A0196-1. Use 'xcrev-all ft' to
determine fan tray part numbers.
To install the 'xcrev-all' script:
a. On the Main SC, as user SMS, create a directory for the files
(i.e. ~/xc-tools).
b. Download 'xcrev-all' from the URL below and copy to this directory.
Set execute permissions on the file.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to
contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of
the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
