PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Sun Fire 280R ATO systems with marketing part number A35-AA require
installation of a new fan try (X9820A) when upgrading processors from
750MHz to a higher speed. However, a specific group of these A35-AA
systems were shipped with the X9820A 3-fan tray already installed and
will not require the fan upgrade. To prevent unneeded installation
effort by support personnel, this FIN explains which of these systems
require the fan upgrade.
This issue affects any Sun Fire 280R A35-AA system which is being
upgraded from 750MHz processors, and which has the old 2-fan tray
assembly (p/n 540-4434) installed. No Sun Fire 280R A35-BA systems are
affected, as they already have the 3-fan tray and do not require the
fan upgrade.
A list of Sun Fire 280R A35-AA systems which already have X9820A
installed and do NOT need the fan upgrade is available at:
http://sdpsweb.central/FIN_FCO/FIN/FINI0894-1_dir/system_list.sdc
NOTE: Save the file to local disk. From your Netscape browser, choose
File->SaveAs->Text->OK. Open the saved file with StarOffice.
To differentiate between the old and new fan trays use the following
criteria:
Old 2-fan tray: P/N 540-4434-02, and the label says 'Assembled in Mexico'.
New 3-fan tray: P/N 540-5088-02, and the label says 'MAYSTEEL USA'.
The new 3-Fan Tray Assembly was made available in manufacturing
via ECO# WO_22200, and in Sun Services via LEAP 1820 as of
October 25, 2001.
This issue occurred because Sun's supplier cut off support for the old
fan tray that was used in the A35-AA systems before we were ready to
introduce marketing part number A35-BA, which includes the new fan
tray.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
When upgrading a Sun Fire 280R A35-AA system from 750MHz processors
to a higher speed processors, follow the procedure below:
1. Use the serial number list provided above or check the part number
of the existing fan tray to determine which type of fan tray is
installed.
2. If the system has the 2-fan tray assembly (p/n 540-4434-xx) installed,
it must be replaced with the new 3-fan tray assembly (p/n 540-5088-xx).
Customers may purchase this 3-fan tray assembly xoption (x9820A) via
their normal Sun sales channel.
3. If the system has a 3-fan tray assembly already installed, customer
should return any unneeded 3-fan tray assemblies to Sun.
