REFERENCES:
BugId: 4509191 - DAR and DCS temperature sensors no longer need reading.
PatchId: 110849 - SunOS 5.8: PICL support for SUNW Sun-Fire-V880.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
In specific Sun Fire V880 configurations, the picld environmental
daemon may fail with continuous error messages being sent to the
console. Picld eventually falls into a degraded mode, causing it to no
longer keep track of environmental conditions. This has the potential
for system damage if allowed to continue for extended periods.
This issue can occur in the following configuration:
Sun Fire V880 systems with:
. Motherboard Part Number 501-6323-xx, running Solaris 8 7/01 or
Solaris 8 10/01 without patch 110849 or later.
NOTE: This issue does not occur with Motherboard 501-4300-xx nor
with Solaris 9.
The picld (1M) daemon is used in the Sun Fire V880 platform to track
environmental conditions. It monitors thermal conditions, LED states,
key switch states, and fan speeds. It is part of the Platform
Information and Control Library (PICL).
When this condition occurs, the following error messages will appear on
the console every 3-10 seconds:
Aug 26 20:21:28 tsgnmcfs03 picld[1410]: [ID 478985 daemon.error] ERROR
running psvc_check_temperature_policy_0 on DAR8_DIE_TEMPERATURE_SENSOR
(2566152)
Aug 26 20:21:28 tsgnmcfs03 picld[1410]: [ID 855019 daemon.error] Bad file
number
Aug 26 20:21:28 tsgnmcfs03 picld[1410]: [ID 478985 daemon.error] ERROR
running psvc_check_temperature_policy_0 on DCS8_DIE_TEMPERATURE_SENSOR
(2566184)
Aug 26 20:21:28 tsgnmcfs03 picld[1410]: [ID 875627 daemon.error] No such
file or directory
This problem is a result of certain components being removed from
Motherboard 501-6323-xx via ECO WO_22330. The MAX1617, DAR and DCS
temperature sensing devices were removed from the Motherboard, but the
picld software was not updated to reflect this. The error messages
occur as a result.
This issue is addressed in patch 110849 for Solaris 8. The fix has
been integrated into Solaris 8 2/02 and Solaris 9 and no patch is
needed.
IMPLEMENTATION:

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
Install patch 110849 (or later) on Sun Fire V880 systems running
Solaris versions earlier than Solaris 8 2/02.
COMMENTS:
None.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Sun Services will attempt to contact
all affected customers to recommend implementation of the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Sun Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Sun Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
