40802 | L20/40/60 & L9 Password 'Back door' | 2 Nov 2001 |
Status | Issued |
Description |
The L20/40/60 & L9 are password protected in order to secure vital customer information concerning the Library itself. When these products are shipped to the customer, they are received with a generic password and the customer has the option to change it.
At times, the customer forgets or loses his/her password, and this is the time he will call you for your help. Below is Sun's confidential global 'Back Door' password enable process. This procedure should not be given out to any customer, but it is our responsibility to help the customer overcome his/her password problem.
Customer should be familiar with the 'menu tree', and if not, refer to the operators manual.
1. The user must have access to the Front Panel of the tape library, which rules out remote administration.
2. From the INFORMATION menu, user goes to display the Date & Time.
3. User tells Call Center the Date & Time displayed. Timezone is NOT used.
4. If the display shows that 'Date & Time are invalid', have the user press Button 1 (the left-most button). This button is NOT labeled. Otherwise, proceed to step 5.
The user should then see a warning message (to call Service), then must press 'OK'
The TSE should now provide the special password '44122333'
The user enters this special code on the front panel, then presses 'OK'
The Screen confirms that the user password has been reset.
The TSE cautions the user to set a new Password and to set the Date & Time.
5. If the display shows a date and time, have the user repeat the Date & Time displayed. Timezone is NOT used.
Tell user to press Button 1 (the left-most button). This button is NOT labeled.
The user should see a warning message (to call Service), then must press 'OK'
TSE now calculates special password as follows:
(Hours * 1001) + (Days * 101) + Month + Year (all 4 digits) = subtotal
Multiply subtotal by 123
If subtotal > 99,999,999 (although this should never happen), use the special password of '44122333'
Otherwise:-
For each digit
if digit = 0, make digit = 1
else if digit = 9, make digit = 1
else if digit > 4, subtract 4 from digit else keep digit unchanged.
If the result is less than 8 digits, add LEADING 1's to make it 8 digits.
This 8-digit number is the special password.
Have the user enter this special code on the front panel, then presses 'OK'
The screen confirms that the user password has been reset.
The TSE should caution the user to set a new password.
Notes:
1. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should the call center give the Service Password (used to enter the Service Menu) to customers, as this is a global password for all SUN L20/40/60 libraries (including L9).
2. The 'special password' is calculated from the Date & Hour, and is only valid while the library value of HOUR is unchanged. The user can be reassured that there is no global 'special' password, as long as the Date & Time are valid.
3. If the time displayed is close to an hour change (e.g. 15:59), the call center may choose to advise the user to wait until 16:00 to enter the 'special password' (and call center calculates password accordingly). Remember the user cannot set or change the Date & Time, as this is in the password-protected area of the 'menu tree'.
4. Within the library, the Date & Time used to calculate the 'special password' is stored at the moment the user presses Button 1 while displaying the current date & time. i.e. once the user has reached the 'warning - call service' screen, or the subsequent 'enter special password' screen. The special password remains valid until the user chooses to leave these screens.
