Description

This is a procedure to update the firmware on the Sun Fire [TM] 3800/4800/4810/6800 systems with the flashupdate command from the "Platform Shell" (system controller). The -f option is normally used with the flashupdate command and it commonly directs the flashupdate to get the flash patch files from a ftp server. Procedures in the document "Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 Systems Platform Administration Manual" (.pdf file included with the Sun Fire flashprom update patch) indicate that it is necessary to setup the ftp "Firmware Server" as an anonymous ftp server, and gives full instructions on how to set this up. There is a time-saving procedure that skips this step (setting the firmware server up for anonymous ftp).

Here are the steps:

- Retrieve, then extract the "Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 Systems flashprom update" patch and place on a server which is on the same network as the Sun Fire system to be updated (must be available via ftp). Note: the server that contains the patch can be another domain on the same Sun Fire system (only if multiple domains have been previously setup).

- Telnet or tip into the system controller which needs to be flashupdated and go to "Platform Shell" (prompt should end with SC:>).

- run the flashupdate command in the following form:

flashupdate -f ftp://root:password@ip/path_to_patches/ all rtos

"ip" is the ip address of the system where the flash patch is located "password" is the root password where the flash patch is located - change root password before, then change back after the doing this (for security) example shows "all" and "rtos" done in one command (they can be done separately)
