44161   How to increase DCR on a Sun StorEdge[TM] 9900 (99x0 Product line) subsystem   11 Jun 2002

Description

This infodoc outlines the procedure for increasing Dynamic
Cache Residency. DCR, (a.k.a. FlashAccess) is typically
configured during the "Define and Install" of a subsystem. This
one-time installation may be done prior to shipment to the
site or immediately after arrival. Sometimes, DCR may be
incorrectly calculated, OR the need for more DCR may arise.
This doc shows how to increase the amount of DCR within a subsystem
without going through the "Define and Install" process again.

DCR can only be allocated when cache is allocated. If you try
to increase DCR without adding more cache, you will NOT get
a "pulldown" allowing for an increased value. To solve the
problem is to meet the requirment. This is accomplished by.

      a. Deinstalling cache by the amount of DCR required.
      b. Installing the de-installed cache as DCR.

The following is a working example of a 9960 subsystem. Cache
is increased from 0MB to 1024MB. The system has both Basic and
Addition cache boards which each hold 2048 (x2) MB of cache.
The procedure is done from the SVP after changing over to
Modify Mode.

1. Install -> Change Configuration -> Deinstall -> Cache Capacity

2. Dialogue pop-ups will be spawned warning of the impact
of de-installation followed by a password prompt to continue.
   The password is "raid-install"

3. The cache capacity screen will appear. It will look something
   like this.

      Basic CMG=512Mb Size=2048 MB x 2
      Option CMG=512Mb Size=2048 MB x 2
        DCR Available 0 MB x 2

You will hit the button for "Cache Configuration"

4. This is where "pulldowns" exist to de-allocate cache.
From the pulldown, change cache from 2048MB to 1536MB for
the Basic and the Option Boards.

It may be worth noting that the DCR "change" button only
   displays 0MB in the pulldown.

5. Hit OK to the configuration changes. Dialogue boxes will identify
blocking of shared memory and cache memory. Once blocked,
you will be prompted to remove the cache from each cluster
   side.

The first prompt will be for boards 1T and 1U from cluster 1.
The second prompt will be for boards 1G and 1F from cluster 2.

The board ill be identified by a "failed" amber light.

You do NOT HAVE TO PULL THE DIMMS! Only remove the board and
   put it back in.

6. Once deallocation is completed (it takes some time), you can now
follow a similar procedure to install new cache.

Install -> Change Configuration -> Install -> Cache Capacity

7. Once you get to the cache capacity screen, it will look
   something like this.

      Basic CMG=512Mb Size=1536 MB x 2
      Option CMG=512Mb Size=1536 MB x 2
        DCR Available 0 MB x 2

8. Here's where you can add in the cache as DCR. Once you pick
"cache configuration", you can use the pulldown to add back
the cache previsouly removed. This will be done by changing
the cache capacity to 2048 for each board. Now, when you
hit the "change" button for DCR, you will have a pulldown
for 0MB, 512MB or 1024MB. Select the appropriate amount and
proceed through the remaining OK prompts.

9. As in step 5, you will be prompted to add the DIMMS to the
appropriate boards. No DIMMS will be added, the old ones will
just be re-used. Make sure to pull (and put back) the board when
   prompted.

10. When complete, "Refer Configuration" will identify 1024MB of
DCR available to be used with a CVS volume.

INTERNAL SUMMARY:

This test was performed and completed without issue on both the 9960 subsystems
in the Burlington Storage Lab and the 9960 in the Burlington Garrison Lab.
