Unable to boot after replacing CPU in Ultra 5/10 |
|
25 May 2000 |
After replacing the CPU in the Ultra 5 or 10, the system won't boot.
The CPU's that cause this problem are:
Part#: 501-5568
Desc: ASSY,SAP-RED,333MHZ,2MB
or
Part#: 501-5148
Desc: ASY,SPPHR-RED,360MHZ,.25MB
or
Part#: 501-5149
Desc: ASSY,SPPHR-RED,440MHZ,2MB
but only in a system with an OBP level of < 3.19v4
The system will have the following symptoms:
No display.
POST hangs with out passing or indicating a failure.
No output from ttya.
SOLUTION SUMMARY:
A proactive solution would be to upgrade the OBP to >= 3.19V4 prior to
replacing the CPU. After the fact, a possible solution is to temporarily
replace the offending CPU(mentioned previously) with an unaffected CPU,
then upgrade the OBP.
INTERNAL SUMMARY:
This problem is seen when the following occurs:
501-5568 is substituted for 501-5090
501-5148 is installed into a Ultra 5 (A21) as an upgrade.
501-5149 is installed into a Ultra 10 (A22) as an upgrade.
