-
Ultra 80 system console goes into suspend (sleep) mode during boot . After hearing brief disk activity, the four lights on the keyboard flash once, the cdrom light illuminates, then the display goes blank and the system hangs.
-
Or, if an ASCII terminal is connected to ttya on the same machine, the terminal will display the error: memory not aligned.
SOLUTION SUMMARY:
-
Check whether the DIMMs are installed in the correct order . The recommended memory installation sequence is Bank 0, 2, 1, 3. You must install a complete bank of 4 DIMMs, in each bank. The DIMM banks on an Ultra 80 are labeled as follows:
Bank # DIMM location#
0 U1301 (located on systemboard)
0 U1302 (located on systemboard)
0 U0301 (located on memory riser)
0 U0302 (located on memory riser)
2 U1303 (located on systemboard)
2 U1304 (located on systemboard)
2 U0303 (located on memory riser)
2 U0304 (located on memory riser)
1 U1401 (located on systemboard)
1 U1402 (located on systemboard)
1 U0401 (located on memory riser)
1 U0402 (located on memory riser)
3 U1403 (located on systemboard)
3 U1404 (located on systemboard)
3 U0403 (located on memory riser)
3 U0404 (located on memory riser)
-
If the DIMMs are installed correctly, you may have a defective DIMM. You can try to identify a bad DIMM in your system by removing all the DIMMs except for those installed in bank0. If the system still fails to boot, remove all the DIMMs from bank0 and replace them with another 4 DIMMs.
-
If you're still having problems, remove all the PCI cards, and unplug any external devices and cables attached to the Ultra 80. With an ASCII terminal connected to the ttya port, power cycle the system. If the system successfully passes POST, then you have a bad PCI card or external device. Reinstall the devices and the PCI cards one at a time, until you narrow down your failing or non compatible piece of hardware.
