47417   Sun Fire[TM] 12K/15K: Command pool timeout dstop after installing 2222A SCSI PCI cards   23 Oct 2002

Status Issued

Description

Sun Fire[TM] 15K Servers with newly installed 2222A SCSI PCI Adapter cards ("Cauldron" cards) may not be able to boot Solaris[TM] 8 10/01 (Update 6). As a result, "Dstop" errors could be encountered which would prevent the SF15K domain from booting.

SOLUTION SUMMARY:

Explanation:

The adapter card, a Dual FastEthernet + Dual SCSI PCI Adapter card, causes the dstop to occur upon boot up at the stage where the driver for the card is getting initialized. The reason for the failure is that the driver needed for the card to be operational is not included in the Solaris 8 10/01 software. Therefore, before installing the software, or as a part of the jumpstart image itself, patch 109885-08 must be included in the image in order for the SF15K domain with the option 2222A card to be able to boot up successfully.

Action:

JumpStart[TM] servers not containing patch 109885-08 or later will fail to net boot a domain containing the 2222A adapter. Therefore, install the patch in the jumpstart image itself and then do the boot net - install of the domain. It should boot up just fine.

See FIN I0794-1 for details on this problem.
