48636   Troubleshooting Tip for the Sun Fire [TM]V480   12 Nov 2002

Status Issued

Description

Description:

Sun Fire V480 powers on, but there is no display to the monitor or Serial/RSC ports.

The amber LED's on the front and rear of the system are lit.

SOLUTION SUMMARY:

Solution:

One possible component that would cause this behavior is a failed DC-DC converter on the I/O Riser Board.

What will be observed is that the system will appear to be getting power normally and the fans will all

spin up, but the system will give no output at all and the amber LED's on the front and rear of the

system indicating a general fault will be illuminated.

To check to see if this is being caused by a faulty DC-DC converter, remove the cover over the

I/O Riser Board and look for the fault LED's beside the DC-DC converters (between the converters and the

PCI slot connectors).

Each DC-DC converter has a single fault LED. If any of the 3 amber LED's are lit it indicates a faulty converter and the I/O Riser Board (part number 501-5820) should be replaced.

(the individual DC-DC converters are not Field Replaceable Units so you will need to order the I/O Riser Board itself)

Note: this is of course just one possible cause of this failure symptom, if after further investigation

the machine you are troubleshooting does not match this behavior exactly more troubleshooting will be

needed.
