Not sure what distro you're on, but you're probably missing headers and should install GCC.  Once you're done with that, check out one of the many install guides like -> http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch1_:_Network_Backups_With_Rancid
