Is the opposition to Github something philosophical, or just wanting
to keep the canonical source in your own repository? If the latter
mirroring your repo up to Github (or one of the many other free online
git/svn/hg/fotm scm sites) would save you from having to maintain and
secure your own public interface, and make it easier for people to
work with (instead of having to make their own project on said site,
upload source, make changes, generate patch, leave stale old version
around forever, etc). That's what the Linux kernel/GNOME/Apache etc
currently do, usually using a post-commit hook in the canonical
repository to push up to Github.
