Systems with StorEdge A1000, A3x00 or A3500FC Arrays, whic h are configured to run under volume manager software, may experience database or application problems when repeated disk I/O error retries occur. Excessive RDAC and Solaris disk driver retry attempts on I/O errors may result in database managers (such as Oracle) or applications to timeout. This may cause the applications to crash or run very slowly following an I/O timeout.

16-PORT Python Switch (370-4276-01) Some StorEdge Network FC Switch-16 units were assembled and shipped from the vendor with their mounting brackets reversed. This could potentially result in these switches being installed backwards in the 72-inch StorEdge Expansion Cabinet. This improper installation may cause the inlet temperature of the switch to exceed its recommended range and this could affect the performance and the life of the switch. In addition, the connecting fibre cables might be damaged by hitting the rear cabinet door and may require replacement.

All Brocade Silkworm switches that are re-sold through Sun Professional Services (PS) will contain IBM or Finisar GBIC's without Sun part numbers, which are identical to the short wave GBIC's that Sun currently sells and supports. The Brocade switches themselves will have a Sun part number (370-4395-01 or 370-4396-01) and a serial number label, but the GBIC's in the switches may not have a Sun part number. The non-Sun GBICs will be labeled as follows:

FC Switch-8 (370-4035)
FC Switch-8 Assy (540-4372)
FC Switch-16 Assy (540-4751)
StorEdge Network FC Switch-8 and StorEdge Network FC Switch-16 products installed in a Storage Area Network (SAN) configuration must have the proper level of firmware installed for proper operation. All switches in the SAN must contain matching firmware versions. Failure to verify and install the correct switch firmware when installing or replacing switches in a SAN can cause the switch to fail. It is important that the firmware of existing switches in a SAN and any replacement switch be checked for compatibility when installing a new switch into the SAN configuration.

This FIN highlights the precautions that should be followed if performing Solaris Operating Environment upgrades on the system with Sun StorEdge RAID Manager software installed, Absence of these precautions could result in data loss or possibly the data corruption. When upgrading from Solaris 2.6 to any higher Solaris version, a copy of the file /kernel/drv/sd.conf needs to be backed up and then restored after the upgrade. If this action is not taken then an upgrade will result in repeated error messages upon boot up and an inability to scan the array module

The replacement procedure for the SCSI controller board (ESM card) in a D1000 disk array is not well-documented. If the proper procedure is not followed, complications can arise which might lead to data loss. This FIN describes correct ESM replacement procedures and gives examples of additional problems which might occur as a result of an ESM card failure and its subsequent replacement. Replacement of the D1000 ESM card may result in drives being "failed" in one or more drive trays of an A3x00/A3500FC array. A failure of an ESM card will cause the entire D1000 tray to go offline. As a result, all disks in the D1000 tray will go offline until the ESM card is replaced.

On an A3x00 disk subsystem, one or more disks may go offline unexpectedly during operation, which can cause applications to fail or lose data. With no warning, one to a few disks (LUNs) may go OFFLINE. Some come back on their own, however the one which has the most hits will go offline periodically until the system is rebooted. The problem will reappear. Replacing disks does not solve the problem. The following type of messages will be reported in /var/adm/messages:

Power Sequencer Cables Power sequencer cables in StorEdge A3500/A3500FC 1x5 configurations may be connected incorrectly, causing potential data access issues. The L5, R5, L6, and R6 power sequencer cables on a certain number of A3500/A3500FC arrays were installed in the wrong order at Sun Manufacturing. This causes the controllers to power-up before the D1000 disk trays. The controllers search for disks and try to configure LUN's while the disks are still spinning up.

When patch 105463-05 (SEVM2.5 patch) is applied on an operational system, and the system is rebooted, some storage devices may appear to be missing or longer listed. This symptom may also be experienced when installing EVM2.6, upon execution of vxinstall, not all of the storage devices on the system will be available for EVM to use. This may happen on systems that have a mixture of storage devices, although there have been reports of systems with a single SPARCstorage Array attached, experiencing loss of access to some of the disks after application of this patch. The device loss is due to a modification that had been made to the DMP driver binary file in this release of the patch. Systems that have disabled DMP operation will not experience this problem.
